Staff experiences of the use of virtual consultations in non-surgical oncology systemic anticancer therapy services.

Purpose: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual consultations were introduced rapidly across cancer services. This created a particular set of challenges for systemic anticancer therapy services, where patients have frequent, regular appointments to support decision-making regarding treatment. This study explores the experiences of staff who provide these consultations to understand the implications for patients, staff, and services.

Differences in long-term survival in two lacunar stroke types: a 15-year follow-up study in 782 cerebral infarct patients.

Background: Mortality studies in lacunar (LAC) stroke are scarce and often characterized by short follow-up time, small patient groups and absence of a nonlacunar stroke group for comparison. Besides, there are no separate long-term prognostic data on LAC stroke subtypes. We performed a long-term mortality study in LAC stroke, subtyping two distinct phenotypes and including nonlacunar ischemic stroke for comparison.

Validation of the Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project syndrome diagnosis derived from a standard symptom list in acute stroke.

Background: The Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project (OCSP) classification allows distinction of stroke subtypes with different prognosis. OCSP classification inferred from clinical signs filled out on patient entry forms has been used to facilitate subgroup analysis in clinical trials. However, such procedure has not been validated against clinical diagnosis.

Implementing the EGASIS trial, an international multicenter acute intervention trial in stroke.

This paper describes some of the problems that were encountered during implementation of the Early GABA-ergic Activation Study In Stroke (EGASIS), a large international multicenter clinical trial evaluating the neuroprotective effect of diazepam in acute stroke. The focus is on obtaining funding for such a large international nonprofit trial, getting approval from all national and local ethics committees, shipping trial medication, and trial insurance. For each topic the specific problems and ways in which they were solved are described.
