One of the mechanisms employed by the opportunistic pathogen to acquire the essential element iron is the production and release of two ferric iron chelating compounds (siderophores), ornibactin and pyochelin. Here we show that is also able to take advantage of a range of siderophores produced by other bacteria and fungi ('xenosiderophores') that chelate iron exclusively by means of hydroxamate groups. These include the tris-hydroxamate siderophores ferrioxamine B, ferrichrome, ferricrocin and triacetylfusarinine C, the bis-hydroxamates alcaligin and rhodotorulic acid, and the monohydroxamate siderophore cepabactin.

They are homologues of the well characterized protein CjCeuE from Campylobacter jejuni. The iron-binding histidine and tyrosine residues are conserved in both thermophiles.

A synthetic protocol utilizing focused-microwave dielectric heating proved indispensable in the efficient synthesis of the PK cyclopentenone products. "π-Deficient" heteroaromatic substrates, e.

By condensing mono-, di- and trihydroxybenzaldehydes with aromatic thiosemicarbazides, aryl hydrazides and dithiocarbazates, three series of structurally related Schiff bases were synthesised, characterised and tested for XOR inhibitory activity. Hydroxy substitution in the para-position of the benzaldehyde component was found to confer high inhibitory activities.

The rate of CO release is related to the overall solution phase stability of the transition metal carbonyl complex. The cytotoxicity and vasodilatory properties of CORM-F10 have been determined.

Ruthenium-based carbonyls [tricarbonyldichloro ruthenium(II) dimer and tricarbonylchloro-(glycinato)ruthenium(II)] and boronacorbonates (sodium boranocarbonate) have been shown to promote vasodilatory, cardioprotective, and anti-inflammatory activities in a variety of experimental models. Here, we extend our previous studies by showing that eta-4-(4-bromo-6-methyl-2-pyrone)tricarbonyl iron (0) (CORM-F3), an irontricarbonyl complex that contains a 2-pyrone motif, liberates CO in vitro and exerts pharmacological actions that are typical of CO gas.

Acidification of aqueous solutions containing molybdate and each of the nucleotides resulted in the formation of a single species characterized by (1)H resonances which are deshielded relative to those of free nucleotide. Analysis of the two-component systems indicated a Mo/nucleotide ratio of 2.
