Background: Silver is used in various industrial applications, but also in confectioneries and for therapeutic use due to its antibiotic properties. Its toxicity is not well documented and most often only in the context of professional exposure.

Aim: Here we report two cases of high silver concentrations in biological samples in two women: the first patient presented grey marks around her cuticles, probably due to her consumption of silvered sweets and the second patient presented agranulocytosis and thrombocytopenia occurring within 24 h after the topical application of a cream containing sulfadiazine and silver to burns over a large surface area.

Background: In France, liver grafts that have been refused by at least 5 teams are considered for rescue allocation (RA), with the choice of the recipient being at the team's discretion. Although this system permits the use of otherwise discarded grafts in a context of organ shortage, outcomes and potential benefits need to be assessed.

Methods: Between 2011 and 2015, outcomes of RA grafts (n = 33) were compared with SA grafts (n = 321) at a single French center.

Over a 5-month period, four liver transplant patients at a single hospital were diagnosed with Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP). This unusually high incidence was investigated using molecular genotyping. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF) obtained from the four liver recipients diagnosed with PCP were processed for multilocus sequence typing (MLST) at three loci (SOD, mt26s, and CYB).

Article Synopsis
  • Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a significant cause of diarrhea in hospitals, but it can also occur in the general community, potentially leading to severe health outcomes.
  • A study of 136 patients at a French hospital revealed that most CDI cases were healthcare-acquired, but community-acquired cases had a higher severity index.
  • The findings suggest that CDI can be serious even in the community, highlighting the need for further research on people without known risk factors for the infection.

Purpose: To investigate the impact of etomidate on the rate of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in trauma patients and the effects of hydrocortisone in etomidate-treated patients.

Methods: This was a sub-study of the HYPOLYTE multi-centre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of hydrocortisone in trauma patients (NCT00563303). Inclusion criterion was trauma patient with mechanical ventilation (MV) of ≥48 h.
