Background: Platelet (PLT) support is critical to the care of patients with thrombocytopenia, but allogeneic transfusions carry risk. Pathogen reduction mitigates some transfusion risks, but effects on PLT function remain a concern. This clinical pilot study assessed the effect of pathogen reduction technology with riboflavin plus ultraviolet light using thrombelastography (TEG).

Background: Iron deficiency is a frequent side effect of blood donation. In recent years, several studies have described genetic variants associated with iron concentrations. However, the impact of these variants on iron levels is unknown in blood donors.

[The role of the Danish Medical Products Agency in clinical trials].

The registration and legislation concerning clinical trials are described with specific focus on subjects of importance to Danish doctors. Especially the investigators' responsibility for the registration of the trial, reporting of serious adverse events and final report to the agency are mentioned. The fact that the evaluation of a protocol will focus on the risk, the contents of essential new knowledge and the design are emphasised.
