Global trends in CD4 count measurement and distribution at first antiretroviral treatment initiation.

Background: While people with HIV (PWH) start antiretroviral treatment (ART) regardless of CD4 count, CD4 measurement remains crucial for detecting advanced HIV disease and evaluating ART programmes. We explored CD4 measurement (proportion of PWH with a CD4 result available) and prevalence of CD4 <200 cells/µL at ART initiation within the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) global collaboration.

Methods: We included PWH at participating ART programmes who first initiated ART at age 15-80 years during 2005-2019.

Little is known about the adaption of community-based organizations (CBOs) during the COVID-19 crisis. This study aimed to study how HIV CBOs and their community health workers (CHWs) faced the COVID-19 outbreak. Semi-structured interviews (n = 53) were conducted among CHWs in Burundi, Mauritania, and Lebanon in 2021.

Community-based research, that is, the meaningful involvement of affected populations in the production of scientific knowledge that concerns them, is a political struggle and an ethical necessity. Coalition PLUS, an international network of organizations (most of them NGOs) fighting against HIV and hepatitis, created a community-based research laboratory (CBRL) composed of people from more than sixteen countries and various disciplinary fields. The objectives of the CBLR are to build research capacity, ensure collaboration with local and international academic research centers, and develop international research projects.
