Objectives: Randomized clinical trials informing clinical practice (e.g., like large, pragmatic, and late-phase trials) should ideally mostly use harmonized outcomes that are important to patients, family members, clinicians, and researchers.

Article Synopsis
  • - ICU patients are at high risk for vitamin D3 deficiencies due to factors like severe illness, treatments, malnutrition, and aging, especially during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), which can remove vitamin D3 from the body.
  • - The study will utilize a randomized controlled trial to compare the effects of two different doses of vitamin D3 (750,000 IU vs. 500,000 IU) on critically ill patients with severe deficiencies while undergoing CRRT across multiple hospitals in Poland.
  • - The aim is to determine if a 50% increase in vitamin D3 supplementation is more effective in raising serum levels in these patients within a week, helping to address the issue of hypovitaminosis D in critically ill individuals. *

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze patients with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) from the POLVAS registry based on their ANCA status and when they were diagnosed, and compare them to patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) who have elevated eosinophil levels.
  • The results indicated that while ANCA-positive and ANCA-negative EGPA patients had similar clinical characteristics, ANCA-negative patients experienced more cardiovascular issues. Moreover, patients diagnosed before 2012 were generally younger and exhibited higher eosinophil counts and more frequent ENT and cardiovascular symptoms.
  • The researchers developed a model to differentiate between EGPA and GPA with elevated eosinophils, achieving high

Introduction: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a small vessel vasculitis with a complex pathomechanism. Organ damage in GPA is also mediated by extracellular trap formation (NETosis). We analyzed the functional status of phosphoproteins modulating NETosis in neutrophils by the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in GPA along with NETosis biomarkers.

Introduction: Nervous system involvement is common in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitides (AAV). While the involvement of the peripheral and central nervous system is well described, it is still unclear how and to what extent the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is affected. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can provide information on both structure and potential damage of the brain, as well as on the function of selected brain centers.

Introduction: COVID-19 has disturbed the functioning of Polish healthcare for the past two years. Due to the high proportion of patients requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), these wards are particularly overwhelmed and are considered the bottleneck of the healthcare system. The aim of this study was to describe clinical outcomes of critically ill patients treated in a single tertiary ICU in Poland, assess factors associated with mortality and compare outcomes of patients treated during the 2nd and 3rd waves of the pandemic.

Objectives: The study aimed to characterise the Polish population of (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV) with respiratory involvement (RI), in comparison to the subgroup without lung manifestations and the other cohorts.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of the Polish population of AAV with RI was conducted, based on data from the POLVAS registry. Standard descriptive statistics, χ2 test, and Mann-Whitney U test were used to perform comparisons.

Background: The current European guidelines recommend that a preoperative electrocardiogram (ECG) should be performed routinely in patients scheduled for high-risk surgery. However, the evidence regarding ECG as a predictor of perioperative cardiac complications is weak.

Aim: To evaluate the association of preoperative ECG with short- and long-term outcomes in patients undergoing high-risk vascular procedures.

Introduction: ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) is a group of rare disorders where inflammation and damage of the small blood vessels lead to dysfunction of the supplied organs. In severe flares of the disease patients may require intensive care unit (ICU) admission and treatment. The study aims to characterize Polish patients with AAV who were admitted to the ICU and compare them to the others.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to present the treatment modalities and associated side effects in a Polish nation-wide ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) patients' cohort.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with AAV between 1990 and 2016, included in the POLVAS registry was performed. Standard descriptive statistic methods were used with an emphasis on the treatment modalities.

Background: Patients with autoimmune diseases constitute a relatively low percentage of the intensive care unit (ICU) population but their prognosis is particularly poor, partially due to involvement of multiple organs as well as complications related to immunosuppressive treatment. Diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH) is one of the most life-threatening presentations of autoimmune diseases, associated with worse outcomes. The aim of this study is to report about clinical factors associated with DAH in the ICU setting and to assess the survival in 5-year follow-up.

Background/purpose: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a type of primary systemic vasculitis associated with the presence of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). GPA mainly affects medium and small vessels and may manifest in different organs, most commonly upper respiratory tract. Oral lesions occur in 6-13% of GPA patients and might be the first symptom observed by the patient.

Background: The increasing population of very old intensive care patients (VIPs) is a major challenge currently faced by clinicians and policymakers. Reliable indicators of VIPs' prognosis and purposefulness of their admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) are urgently needed.

Methods: This is a report from the Polish sample of the VIP1 multicentre cohort study (NCT03134807).

Purpose: Systemic autoimmune diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders associated with dysfunction of multiple organs and unpredictable course. Complicated management and treatment become even more challenging when patients require critical care. This study aims to compare outcomes of small-vessel vasculitides (SVV) and other systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD) patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

Background: Fluid resuscitation is the cornerstone of sepsis treatment. However, whether balanced or unbalanced crystalloids or natural or synthetic colloids confer a survival advantage is unclear.

Purpose: To examine the effect of different resuscitative fluids on mortality in patients with sepsis.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare the course of the disease and treatment outcomes in ANCA-positive and ANCA-negative eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) patients from one Polish tertiary referral centre.

Methods: Retrospective and prospective cohort study carried out on 50 patients treated in our department between 1998 and 2012. EGPA diagnosis was based on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria.
