Long-term home parenteral nutrition (LTPN) in children with chronic intestinal failure (CIF) can lead to significant kidney issues, including fluid imbalances, kidney stones, and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
A study involving 50 patients aged around 4.2 years revealed that 30% had CKD, and most showed signs of kidney damage such as glomerular proteinuria, which is a key risk factor for CKD progression.
Additionally, the study found that higher levels of urinary α-1 microglobulin were linked to the length of time on LTPN, especially in those with existing CKD.
