Article Synopsis
  • Polarons, resulting from strong electron-phonon interactions, and spin-orbit coupling, which occurs in materials with heavy atoms, both significantly affect how charge and spin behave in certain materials, especially in transition metal oxides.
  • The study introduces a new compound, BaNaCaOsO, where these two effects, usually considered separate, are found to interact and create "spin-orbital bipolarons."
  • As more electrons are added to BaNaCaOsO, it maintains its insulating properties with a stable Mott gap, preventing it from transitioning to a metallic state, even at high levels of electron doping.

Recent technological advancements have facilitated the extensive collection of movement data from large-scale fishing vessels, yet a significant data gap remains for small-scale fisheries. This gap hinders the development of consistent exploitation patterns and meeting the information needs for marine spatial planning in fisheries management. This challenge is specifically addressed in the Campania region of Italy, where several Marine Protected Areas support biodiversity conservation and fisheries management.

During the last decade vessel-position-recording devices, such as the Vessel Monitoring System and the Automatic Identification System, have increasingly given accurate spatial and quantitative information of industrial fisheries. On the other hand, small-scale fisheries (vessels below 12 m) remain untracked and largely unregulated even though they play an important socio-economic and cultural role in European waters and coastal communities and account for most of the total EU fishing fleet. The typically low-technological capacity of these small-scale fishing boats-for which space and power onboard are often limited-as well their reduced operative range encourage the development of efficient, low-cost, and low-burden tracking solutions.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic offered a chance to analyze how fishing efforts in the Adriatic Sea responded to reduced hours and regulations, highlighting fleet resilience.
  • The research used Automatic Identification System data from 2015 to 2020 to assess fishing fleet activity and identify trends based on different gear types.
  • The study found that Adriatic fishing fleets exert significant stress on endangered, threatened, and protected species, suggesting they are resilient and comparable to predators with a notable impact on marine ecosystems.

Article Synopsis
  • Maritime traffic and fishing activities have surged in the past decade, raising environmental and resource concerns, while advancing technologies generate vast amounts of data on vessel movements.
  • The paper combines Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to monitor fishing and identify suspicious behaviors by analyzing ship positions.
  • A machine-learning technique using Fast Fourier Transform classifies sea trips and detects ships that don't broadcast their positions, enhancing surveillance in sensitive marine areas.

Article Synopsis
  • Multibeam echosounders are essential tools for creating detailed 3D maps of underwater terrain and studying water columns, but they generate large amounts of data that are challenging to process efficiently.
  • *This research proposes a new workflow that enhances the detection and classification of underwater targets by using commercial software to calculate target metrics and integrating them into a semi-supervised machine learning system.
  • *Testing this method with data from an Adriatic Sea offshore gas platform resulted in improved detection efficiency and a high accuracy of 98% for classifying targets, despite some uncertainties with user-provided training data.

Article Synopsis
  • Researching fish populations around offshore extraction platforms helps assess their environmental impact and understand the interactions between natural and artificial habitats.!
  • A proposed study plan includes various methods to examine fish presence, school movement, and species composition over time, particularly around a gas extraction platform in the Adriatic Sea.!
  • The findings indicate that these platforms attract fish significantly, with distance from the platform influencing the size of fish schools, highlighting the need for better spatial management in marine ecosystems.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydrocarbon seepage in the marine environment is often neglected due to insufficient detailed exploration data, prompting a need for better monitoring systems.
  • A relocatable and cost-effective monitoring system was tested in two Central Adriatic Sea case studies: an oil spill at 10 m depth and methane seeps at 84 m depth, using advanced detection methods.
  • The study involved measuring nutrient and hydrocarbon concentrations in the water column and sediment, with a novel use of a benthic chamber to collect water samples for analyzing contamination levels.
