Prognostic Factors Affecting Long-Term Outcomes After Elbow Dislocation: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

Purpose: To describe patient-reported outcomes following simple elbow dislocation and to identify the baseline factors that predict outcomes.

Methods: Adult patients treated with a closed reduction for a simple elbow dislocation with or without minor fracture (coronoid avulsion, radial head fracture, or epicondyle avulsion) from 2000 to 2018 completed outcome instruments including Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) via Research Electronic Data Capture. Descriptive statistics were calculated.

Combined local and systemic antibiotic treatment is effective against experimental Staphylococcus aureus peri-implant biofilm infection.

We hypothesized that systemic ceftriaxone and high concentration local antibiotics might eradicate peri-implant sepsis. Experiment 1: Eighty-four implants inoculated with biofilm-forming Staphylococcus aureus were treated in vitro with gentamicin, vancomycin, gentamicin + rifampin, or vancomycin + rifampin for 2, 4, or 8 days. Experiment 2: Forty-five implants were wired in vivo to rat femurs and inoculated with 1 × 10(6) CFU S.

Memory, visual discrimination performance, and the human hippocampus.

We evaluated recent proposals that the hippocampus supports certain kinds of visual discrimination performance, for example, when spatial processing is required and the stimuli have a high degree of feature overlap. Patients with circumscribed hippocampal lesions tried to discriminate between images of similar faces or images of similar scenes. In one condition, elements of the stimulus display repeated from trial to trial, and in another condition every trial was unique.

Role of the hippocampus in remembering the past and imagining the future.

It has been proposed that a core network of brain regions, including the hippocampus, supports both past remembering and future imagining. We investigated the importance of the hippocampus for these functions. Five patients with bilateral hippocampal damage and one patient with large medial temporal lobe lesions were tested for their ability to recount autobiographical episodes from the remote past, the recent past, and to imagine plausible episodes in the near future.
