Article Synopsis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) caused by PVL-producing Staphylococcus aureus are common and often lead to recurrent abscesses, necessitating outpatient decolonization as a recommended treatment.
  • Despite the importance of topical decolonization in managing these infections, health insurance providers frequently do not fully cover the associated costs, which can pose challenges for patients seeking effective treatment.
  • A study conducted at a German university hospital examined the costs of outpatient versus inpatient treatment for recurring PVL-SA infections, revealing that most affected patients were treated as outpatients, emphasizing the need for better insurance reimbursement policies to support effective care.

Background: Recurrent skin abscesses are often associated with Panton-Valentine leukocidin-producing strains of S. aureus (PVL-SA). Decolonization measures are required along with treatment of active infections to prevent re-infection and spreading.

Infections caused by Panton-Valentine leukocidin-positive Staphylococcus aureus (PVL-SA) mostly present as recurrent skin abscesses and furunculosis. However, life-threatening infections (eg, necrotizing pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis, and osteomyelitis) caused by PVL-SA have also been reported. We assessed the clinical phenotype, frequency, clinical implications (surgery, length of treatment in hospitals/intensive care units, and antibiotic treatments), and potential preventability of severe PVL-SA infections in children.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) (also designated acne inversa) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by painful purulent skin lesions and progressive destruction of skin architecture. Despite the high burden for the patients, pathogenetic pathways underlying HS alterations remain obscure. When we examined the HS cytokine pattern, IL-1β turned out to be a highly prominent cytokine, overexpressed even compared with psoriatic lesions.

Background: An increasing number of patients are being treated with anticoagulants and platelet inhibitors. Whenever surgical procedures of the skin are required, questions arise regarding the perioperative management of anticoagulation.

Methods: Development of S3 guidelines following the requirements of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies, systematic literature search and analysis, use of GRADE methodology, structured consensus conference using a nominal group process.

Background: The value of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) as a useful strategy to assess the risk of future metastasis in high-risk melanomas (>4.0 mm) is controversially discussed.

Objectives: In a single-center retrospective study, the prognostic relevance of SLNB and other risk factors in the subgroup of melanomas >4.

Only 10 cases of patients with isolated basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the palms and soles have been published. We describe a patient with an isolated basal cell carcinoma of the palm. Our patient denied injury and exposure to noxious agents; he did not have basal cell nevus syndrome.

A 21-year-old immunocompetent woman developed a cowpox infec-tion,while working as a veterinarian's assistant in a rural area. She had never received vaccinia immunization and came in contact with a fatally-infected house cat. Under symptomatic treatment, the infection remained localized to one cheek and cleared over 3 weeks with substantial dermal-subcutaneous tissue destruction.
