Background: Strictures of the urethra are the most common cause of obstructed micturition in younger men and frequently recur after initial treatment. Standard treatment comprises internal widening of the strictured area by simple dilatation or by telescope-guided internal cutting (optical urethrotomy), but these interventions are associated with a high failure rate requiring repeated treatment. The alternative option of open urethroplasty whereby the urethral lumen is permanently widened by removal or grafting of the strictured segment is less likely to fail but requires greater expertise.

Aim: An ageing population is at significant risk of developing of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We evaluate our units experience in managing RCC in octogenarians using either laparoscopic or open radical nephrectomy, highlighting the postoperative complication rates and survival outcomes.

Materials And Methods: From June 2001 to June 2008, 65 octogenarians underwent a radical nephrectomy for suspected renal cell carcinoma.

The interpretation of QT interval is often neglected during electroencephalography (EEG) reading. We compared the incidence of prolonged QT interval, as seen in the electrocardiography (ECG) recording lead of the EEG, in children presenting with seizure, syncope, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Abnormal QT was defined as >460 ms.

Objective: To audit our results of dorsal buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty for recurrent bulbar urethral stricture disease and compare them with those from specialist centres.

Patients And Methods: Data were collected prospectively on 52 men who had urethroplasty with > or =1 year of follow-up; failure was defined as the need for further intervention.

Results: The mean (range) age of the patients was 39 (19-61) years and 23 (45%) had an identifiable cause for their stricture.
