A clinic-epidemiological study of head and neck tuberculosis - a single-center experience.

Introduction: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) accounts for less than 6% of all tuberculosis (TB) cases in Poland, although in other countries (European in particular) this proportion is much higher. The study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological differences in patients hospitalized in one of Otolaryngology Departments in Poland during 36 years.

Material And Methods: In a retrospective study, 71 patients were identified and divided into three groups according to the study period: I - 1978-1989 (30 patients, 42%), II - 1990-2001 (19 patients, 27%) and III - 2002-2013 (22 patients, 31% of all cases).

Acute laryngeal dyspnea as first presentation of granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a multi-organ disease which mostly affects lungs, kidney, and head and neck region. We report a rare case of acute laryngeal dyspnea and rapidly progressive pulmonary changes as first manifestations of disease. A 53 year-old woman presented with symptoms of two-week dyspnea, which aggravated rapidly in the preceding hours.

The impact of co-morbid factors on the psychological outcome of tinnitus patients.

The study was carried out to determine the impact of some co-morbid otological symptoms and demographic factors on the emotional distress and cognitive functioning in patients with tinnitus. One hundred consecutive patients, complaining of constant idiopathic tinnitus, were enrolled into the study. Four tests were administered: Beck Depression Inventory, Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS, A--anxiety, D--depression), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Trail Making Test (TMT).

Evaluation of the smooth pursuit tests in multiple sclerosis patients.

In multiple sclerosis (MS), randomly located demyelination lesions may involve a large part of the central nervous system and disturb oculomotor activity, including impairment of saccadic and pursuit systems. The aim of the work was to determine the frequency of smooth pursuit disturbances in MS patients and assess the feasibility of various methods for smooth pursuit assessment: the clinical bedside examination and quantitative electrooculographic (EOG) recordings. In addition, we analyzed the effects of age on the results of smooth pursuit tests.

Electronystagmography outcome and neuropsychological findings in tinnitus patients.

Because psychological aspects often are underscored in the generation of tinnitus, we assessed the neuropsychological status in our group of patients. We found an increased number of abnormal electronystagmography (ENG) recordings in tinnitus patients. The aim of this study was to compare the ENG outcome with the patients' neuropsychological status.
