Article Synopsis
  • Recent approaches for treating oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) emphasize the effectiveness of preoperative treatment combining radiation and chemotherapy (neoadjuvant) compared to post-surgery treatments (adjuvant).
  • A study of 128 patients found that those receiving neoadjuvant treatment had higher 5-year tumor-free survival rates (e.g., 83% for T1 tumors) than those receiving adjuvant treatment, especially for T1, T2, and T4 tumors.
  • Overall, results suggest that neoadjuvant treatment not only improves long-term survival rates but also shows promising outcomes, as 72% of neoadjuvant patients survived the observation period compared to 65

Background And Purpose: In recent years, different concepts for the treatment of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) have been developed; these include preoperative simultaneous neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy and one-stage surgery with tumor ablation and reconstruction. When considering long-term survival, there is substantial evidence that multimodality treatment based on a neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy is superior to adjuvant therapy concepts based on a surgical approach with postoperative irradiation. The aim of this study was to discuss the 5-year survival rate in a neoadjuvant and an adjuvant combination treatment in patients with primary OSCC.

This prospective comparative clinical study evaluated the effectiveness of clinical hypnosis and its long-term effect in oral and maxillofacial treatment. A total of 45 highly anxious and nonanxious subjects were evaluated by subjective experience and objective parameters. Parameters were EEG, ECG, heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, respiration rate, salivary cortisol concentration, and body temperature.

Aims: To determine whether there is a difference in terms of reliability between experienced examiners and inexperienced examiners in the measurement of signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

Methods: A total of 27 patients seen for treatment of TMD were rated blindly and in random sequence by 2 experienced and 2 inexperienced examiners. The examiners participated in a 4-hour calibration session on the day preceding the reliability study.

The abnormalities covered by the generic term "oculo-auriculovertebral spectrum" (OAV) form an exceptional heterogeneous dysmorphic complex characterized by unilateral malformations of miscellaneous craniofacial structures. The aim of the present study was to analyze morphometrically the developmental deficits concerning the temporomandibular joints, the mandibular rami and the mastication muscles by comparing the affected with the non-affected side. The volume, maximum horizontal diameter, and trabecular bone density of the head of the mandible, as well as the ramus height were acquired from CT data of 16 patients suffering from this syndrome.

Both treatment concepts, however, have a strong impact on the quality of life.

Background: The treatment of oral cancer has a strong impact on the quality of life. In recent years different therapeutic concepts have been developed, these include preoperative simultaneous "neoadjuvant" radiochemotherapy (RCT) and one-stage surgery with tumor ablation and reconstruction. When considering long-term survival, there is substantial evidence that evidenced modality treatment including neoadjuvant RCT is superior to the primary surgical approach with postoperative radiation.
