Thiolated arsenic (As) compounds have been identified in various natural and engineered environments worldwide and are important for the biogeochemical cycling of As, yet quantitative data regarding their stability and transformation rates remains scarce. This study investigates the oxidation kinetics of mono-, di-, and tri-thioarsenate at varying pH, Fe, and (thio-)As concentrations in the aqueous phase. Experiments conducted over four weeks revealed that all thioarsenates were oxidized faster at lower pH, with rates of up to several μmoles/L/d at a pH of 3.

This study investigates spatiotemporal dynamics in metal sedimentation in the North American Great Lakes and their underlying biogeochemical controls. Bulk geochemical and isotope analyses of n = 72 surface and core sediment samples show that metal (Cu, Zn, Pb) concentrations and their isotopic compositions vary spatially across oligotrophic to mesotrophic settings, with intra-lake heterogeneity being similar or higher than inter-lake (basin-scale) variability. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Pb in sediments from Lake Huron and Lake Erie vary from 5 to 73 mg/kg, 18-580 mg/kg, and 5-168 mg/kg, respectively, but metal enrichment factors were small (<2) across the surface- and core sediments.

Carbon neutral or negative mining can potentially be achieved by integrating carbon mineralization processes into the mine design, operations, and closure plans. Brucite [Mg(OH)] is a highly reactive mineral present in some ultramafic mine tailings with the potential to be rapidly carbonated and can contain significant amounts of ferrous iron [Fe(II)] substituted for Mg; however, the influence of this substitution on carbon mineralization reaction products and efficiency has not been thoroughly constrained. Background: Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is an escalating public health problem with over 100,000 drug overdose-related deaths last year most of them related to opioid overdose, yet treatment options remain limited. Non-invasive Vagal Nerve Stimulation (nVNS) can be delivered via the ear or the neck and is a non-medication alternative to treatment of opioid withdrawal and OUD with potentially widespread applications.

Copper (Cu) stable isotopes can elucidate the biogeochemical controls and sources governing Cu dynamics in aquatic environments, but their application in larger rivers and catchments remains comparatively scarce. Here, we use major and trace element hydrogeochemical data, Cu isotope analyses, and mixing modeling, to assess Cu loads and sources in two major river systems in Ontario, Canada. In both the Spanish River and Trent River catchments, aqueous hydrochemical compositions appeared reasonably consistent, but Cu concentrations were more variable spatially.

Laurentian Great Lakes coastal wetlands (GLCW) are ecological hotspots and their integrity depends upon dynamic hydrologic regimes of the Great Lakes. GLCW naturally adjust to changes in hydrologic regimes via migration, but Great Lakes water levels may be shifting faster than wetlands can manage: 2000-2015 marked an extended low water level period and was followed by record highs in 2017-2020. Purpose: Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy Type VIA with Optic Atrophy (HMSN6A) is a rare variant subtype of mitofusin 2 () associated Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, with ophthalmic manifestations largely limited to optic atrophy. We report a case series of two sisters with HMSN6A corresponding to known variants in the gene. The proband's mother, maternal aunt, and maternal grandfather were also reportedly affected with the condition, although not examined at our institution.

Research has shown that transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) yields downstream changes in peripheral physiology in individuals afflicted with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While the cardiovascular effects of tcVNS have been studied broadly in prior work, the specific effects of tcVNS on the reciprocal of the pulse transit time (1/PTT) remain unknown. We examined the effect of varying multimodal pain management (MMPM) combinations on oral morphine milligram equivalents (OMME) and length of stay (LOS) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Five groups were compared based on the combination of multimodal analgesics ranging from no MMPM to full MMPM with acetaminophen, gabapentinoids, and celecoxib. After risk adjustment, MMPM was associated with decreased odds of LOS ≥2 days and OMME ≥75th percentile.
