A selection of seven phytocannabinoids representative of the major structural types of classic cannabinoids and their corresponding cannabivarins was investigated for in vivo topical anti-inflammatory activity in the Croton oil mouse ear dermatitis assay. Differences in the terpenoid moiety were far more important for anti-inflammatory activity than those at the C-3 alkyl residue, suggesting the involvement not only of cannabinoid receptors, but also of other inflammatory end-points targeted by phytocannabinoids.

Eupatilin (5,7-dihydroxy-3',4',6-trimethoxyflavone) is the major lipophilic flavonoid from Artemisia umbelliformis Lam. and Artemisia genipi Weber, two mountain wormwoods used for the production of the celebrated alpine liqueur genepy. The topical anti-inflammatory activity of eupatilin was investigated using the inhibition of the Croton-oil-induced dermatitis in the mouse ear as the end point.

The solid-phase synthesis of peptides (SPPS) containing [60]fullerene-functionalized amino acids is reported. A new amino acid, fulleropyrrolidino-glutamic acid (Fgu), is used for the SPPS of a series of analogues of different length based on the natural Leu(5)-Enkephalin and on cationic antimicrobial peptides. These fullero-peptides were prepared on different solid supports to analyze the influence of the resin on the synthesis.

We have analysed the toxicity of highly cationic, artificial alpha-helical antimicrobial peptides on blood cells to assess their suitability for systemic application. Flow cytometric methods, based on the uptake of propidium iodide, were used to obtain a rapid and quantitative estimate of membrane damage to resting and concanavalin A-activated mouse lymphocytes, which was further confirmed by morphological changes as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Membrane permeabilization appeared to correlate with structural characteristics, so that the peptide L-19(9/B), which contains helix-stabilizing aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) residues and is a potent antimicrobial, was also the most lytic towards both mouse lymphocytes and human erythrocytes.
