The reductive catalytic fractionation of flax shives in the presence of bimetallic NiRu catalysts supported on oxidized carbon materials (CM) such as mesoporous Sibunit and carbon mesostructured by KAIST (CMK-3) was studied. The catalysts based on CMK-3 were characterized by a higher surface area (1216 m/g) compared to the ones based on Sibunit (315 m/g). The catalyst supported on CMK-3 (10Ni3RuC400) was characterized by a more uniform distribution of Ni particles, in contrast to the Sibunit-based catalyst (10Ni3RuS450), on the surface of which large agglomerated particles (300-400 nm) were presented.

Arabinogalactan depolymerization over solid Zr-containing SBA-15-based catalyst was studied via HPLC, GPC, and theoretical modeling. Arabinogalactans (AG) are hemicelluloses mainly present in larch wood species, which can be extracted on an industrial scale. The application of solid acid catalysts in the processes of hemicellulose conversion can exclude serious drawbacks such as equipment corrosion, etc.

Layers of germanium (Ge) nanowires (NWs) on titanium foils were grown by metal-assisted electrochemical reduction of germanium oxide in aqueous electrolytes based on germanium oxide without and with addition of sodium silicate. Structural properties and composition of Ge NWs were studied by means of the scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. When sodium silicate was added to the electrolyte, Ge NWs consisted of 1-2 at.

Due to particular physico-chemical characteristics and prominent optical properties, nanostructured germanium (Ge) appears as a promising material for biomedical applications, but its use in biological systems has been limited so far due to the difficulty of preparation of Ge nanostructures in a pure, uncontaminated state. Here, we explored the fabrication of Ge nanoparticles (NPs) using methods of pulsed laser ablation in ambient gas (He or He-N mixtures) maintained at low residual pressures (1-5 Torr). We show that the ablated material can be deposited on a substrate (silicon wafer in our case) to form a nanostructured thin film, which can then be ground in ethanol by ultrasound to form a stable suspension of Ge NPs.

A sequence-specific modification of the human 5.8 S rRNA in isolated 60 S subunits, non-programmed 80 S ribosomes and ribosomes complexed with mRNA and tRNAs was studied with the use of a derivative of the nonaribonucleotide UCUGUGUUU bearing a perfluorophenylazide group on the C-5 atom of the 5'-terminal uridine. Part of the oligonucleotide moiety of the derivative was complementary to the 5.

This study is centred upon an important biological problem concerning the structural organization of mammalian ribosomes that cannot be studied by X-ray analysis because 80S ribosome crystals are still unavailable. Here, positioning of the mRNA on 80S ribosomes was studied using mRNA analogues containing the perfluorophenylazide cross-linker on either the guanosine or an uridine residue. The modified nucleotides were directed to positions from -9 to +6 with respect to the first nucleotide of the P site bound codon by a tRNA cognate to the triplet targeted to the P site.
