It is caused by suddenly appearing autoantibodies that interfere with coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) activity. Although some conditions such as autoimmune diseases, cancer and puerperium seem likely to induce AH, in more than half of the observed cases autoantibodies to FVIII are idiopathic.
