Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus associated with fatal disease in progressively infected cats. While testing/removal and vaccination led to a decreased prevalence of FeLV, recently, this decrease has reportedly stagnated in some countries. This study aimed to prospectively determine the prevalence of FeLV viraemia in cats taken to veterinary facilities in 32 European countries.

Background: To assess the predictive role of lactate dehydrogenases (LDH) and fibrinogen (FBG) serum levels in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients receiving a first-line bevacizumab-based therapy.
Objectives: The aim of the present analysis was to retrospectively evaluate the role of basal and post-treatment LDH and FBG serum levels in predicting the clinical outcome of 139 mCRC patients receiving first-line chemotherapy in combination with bevacizumab.
Results: A statistically significant association between high pre-treatment LDH and FBG levels and progressive disease was observed with respect to low basal LDH and FBG patients.
Cetuximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that has revolutionized the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Knowledge of the mechanisms that underlie its effectiveness, as well as the primary and secondary resistance mechanisms, have led to important developments in the understanding of cetuximab biology. In light of knowledge gained from recent trials, the efficacy of cetuximab has been clearly demonstrated to depend upon RAS mutational status, moreover cetuximab should only be used in a subset of patients who may benefit.

Enzymatic activation of irinotecan (CPT-11) is due to carboxylesterase (CES), and its pharmacological behavior is influenced by drug resistance-related proteins. We previously reported that the clinical response and prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients did not differ in tumors with different thymidylate synthase (TS) or topoisomerase-I (Topo-I) expression. Patients And Methods: Data on clinicopathology, skeletal outcomes, skeletal-related events (SREs), and bone-directed therapies for 208 deceased GC patients with evidence of bone metastasis were statistically analyzed.
Pancreatic adenocarcinoma displays a variety of molecular changes that evolve exponentially with time and lead cancer cells not only to survive, but also to invade the surrounding tissues and metastasise to distant sites. These changes include: genetic alterations in oncogenes and cancer suppressor genes; changes in the cell cycle and pathways leading to apoptosis; and also changes in epithelial to mesenchymal transition. The most common alterations involve the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene, the HER2 gene, and the K-ras gene.

PTHrP serum elevations have also been described in multiple myeloma (MM), although their role is not well defined. When we investigated MM cells from patients and cell lines, we found that PTHrP and its receptor (PTH-R1) are highly expressed, and that PTHrP is secreted both as a full-length molecule and as small subunits.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: We explore the clinical and prognostic significance of expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-2, platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR)-β, and c-Met in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods: The expression of VEGFR-2, PDGFR-β, and c-Met were determined by immunohistochemical examination of the tissues of 93 HCC patients. The relationships of these markers with clinicopathological factors and prognosis were then analyzed.
Two fiber Raman probes are presented, one based on an optically-poled double-clad fiber and the second based on an optically-poled double-clad fiber coupler respectively. Optical poling of the core of the fiber allows for the generation of enough 532nm light to perform Raman spectroscopy of a sample of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), when illuminating the waveguide with 1064nm laser light. The Raman signal is collected in the inner cladding, from which it is retrieved with either a bulk dichroic mirror or a double-clad fiber coupler.

A 77-year-old male patient presented to our attention with violaceous nodular lesions on the skin of his hands and lower extremities. Clinical and histologic examination supported the diagnosis of Kaposi sarcoma. A first-line systemic chemotherapy based on liposomal doxorubicin at a dosage of 40 mg/m2 every 3 weeks for 5 cycles was carried out, resulting in partial resolution of skin lesions.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSF) stimulate the proliferation and survival of neutrophils and their precursors, thereby reducing the incidence, duration and severity of neutropenic events across a broad range of malignancies and regimens, often enabling the delivery of full chemotherapy dose intensity.

The salt 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bromide, [((CH(3))(2)N)(2)C═NH(2)](+)Br(-) or [tmgH]Br, was found to melt at 135(5) °C, forming what may be referred to as a moderate temperature ionic liquid. The chemistry was studied and compared with the corresponding chloride compound. We present X-ray diffraction and Raman evidence to show that also the bromide salt contains dimeric ion pair "molecules" in the crystalline state and probably also in the liquid state.

We have investigated their role in the in vitro expression of Osterix by primary osteoblast cultures from MM patients and found that Osterix RNA was constitutively down-regulated in these cells. Treatment of osteoblasts with Bortezomib resulted in an increase of Osterix RNA and in enhanced activity of both BMP-2 and Runx2.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe calcitonin receptor (CTR) is a seven-transmembrane-domain G-protein-coupled receptor that regulates calcium metabolism and bone resorption by osteoclasts. Here we demonstrate that high levels are expressed by normal human T and B lymphocytes from tonsils and peripheral blood in relation to their activation status, as CTR(+) T cells are prone to produce IFN-gamma after TCR stimulation. The receptor is also highly expressed on B cells from chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients, thus suggesting a correlation between its expression, their proliferative extent as well as their memory, antigen-experienced phenotype.
