Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving eight patients with Beals syndrome showed significant improvement in spinal curvature after surgery, with corrections averaging from 82.3° to 42.1° at final follow-up.
  • * While no patients experienced permanent neurological deficits post-surgery, 25% required additional operations for complications like implant dislodgement, highlighting the complexity of surgical management in this population.

Several conjugates between folic acid and a series of kinetically stable lanthanide complexes have been synthesized, using amide coupling and azide-alkyne cycloaddition methodologies to link the metal-binding domain to folate through a variety of spacer groups. While all these complexes exhibit affinity for the folate receptor, it is clear that the point of attachment to folate is essential, with linkage through the γ-carboxylic acid giving rise to significantly enhanced receptor affinity. All the conjugates studied show affinities consistent with displacing biological circulating folate derivatives, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, from folate receptors.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed the rate of Unplanned Return to the Operating Room (UPROR) among early-onset scoliosis patients who underwent Magnetically Controlled Growing Rod (MCGR) implantation without previous spine surgery.
  • A total of 376 patients, averaging 7.7 years old, were reviewed, revealing that 38% experienced UPROR within about 2 years post-surgery, primarily due to complications related to the implant or anchor.
  • Findings indicate that while 20% had a UPROR by 2 years, this rate rose significantly by the 5-year mark, with only 39% avoiding UPROR, providing valuable insights for patient and family discussions about future surgeries.

Digital parenting programs aim to increase program access, improve psychosocial outcomes for parents and children, and support triage to targeted interventions where required. This meta-analysis assessed the efficacy of online parenting programs in improving parenting skills and capabilities, and by consequence, the mental health and well-being of parents and children, and the quality of the parent-child relationship. Studies were included if they were: (1) online, (2) self-delivered, (3) designed for universal general population prevention, (4) evaluated experimental or quasi-experimental designs, and (5) assessed parent and child emotional and/or relational health, from pregnancy to 5 years of age.

The impact of family violence (FV) on children is a significant global public policy issue. Earliest identification of FV among children is critical for preventing escalating sequelae. While practitioners routinely ask adults about FV, there are relatively few measures that enable children to reliably self-report on their own safety.

Background: Here, we report new prevalence and temporal stability data for child attachment and parental caregiving behaviour, from infancy (1 year) to preschool (4 years).

Methods: Attachment (SSP) and caregiving data (MBQS) were from observations of parents and their infants and preschoolers, who represent the third generation of participants within an Australian longitudinal cohort.

Results: At 1 year (n = 314 dyads) and at 4 years (n = 368 dyads), proportions assessed secure were 59% and 71%, respectively.

Purpose: Maternal psychological distress and mother-infant bonding problems each predict poorer offspring outcomes. They are also related to each other, yet the extensive literature reporting their association has not been meta-analysed.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Embase, ProQuest DTG, and OATD for English-language peer-reviewed and grey literature reporting an association between mother-infant bonding, and multiple indicators of maternal psychological distress.

This case study describes the development and implementation of a replicable early assessment and referral service for mothers experiencing minority group disadvantage and family violence in the perinatal period. The service aims to mitigate harms for at-risk mother-infant dyads that can lead to involvement in statutory child protection systems. In doing this, the service follows a culturally safe, restorative practice approach to supporting vulnerable families, which emphasises the relationship between worker and client to create a nurturing environment for change.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assessed parental sensitivity to infants using the Mini-Maternal Behavior Q-Sort (Mini-MBQS), focusing on identifying latent factors and their relation to infant attachment classifications.
  • - Two key factors were identified: (1) Attention and Responsiveness, and (2) Contingency in Interactions, using data from 313 parent-infant dyads in an Australian study.
  • - The findings showed that infants with insecure attachments had parents with lower sensitivity, particularly those with resistant and disorganized attachments, which could enhance clinical interventions and research practices.

1,8-Bis(boronic ester) derivatives of naphthalene, 1,8-CH{B(OR)}, present an attractive target as receptors for the fluoride ion B-F-B chelation, but are synthetically challenging to access due to the competing formation of a very stable anhydride containing a B-O-B motif. By contrast, unsymmetrical systems of the type 1,8-CH{B(OR)}(BR') can be synthesized for (OR) = 1,2-OCH ( Cat) and R' = Mes. This system is shown to be competent for the uptake of F, making use of a chelating mode of action and the formation of a bridging B-F-B motif between the two boron centres.

The importance of infant social-emotional development for outcomes across the lifecourse has been amply demonstrated. Despite this, most screening measures of social-emotional development are designed for children 18 months of age and over, with a clear gap in earlier infancy. No systematic review has yet harvested the evidence for candidate indicators in the perinatal window.

There is a current escalating need for telehealth (TH) options in family mental health services. In the absence of replicated evidence, TH guidelines from peak bodies are largely based on assumptions of the effectiveness of TH methods. New investments in TH would optimally be based in evidence of clinical efficacy.

Background: Parents who experience relational trauma may inadvertently create contexts of care that undermine secure beginnings to life for their young children. Universal health services such as Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services offer a unique whole-of-population platform for prevention through early detection and intervention. To date however, relevant workforce training has been minimal.

Microbubbles stabilized by an outer lipid shell have been studied extensively for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The shell composition can significantly influence microbubble behavior, but performing quantitative measurements of shell properties is challenging. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of spectral imaging to characterize the surface properties of a range of microbubble formulations representing both commercial and research agents.

Objective: To perform a thorough search of the literature on calcium research and specifically address the topic of calcium absorption.

Methods: PubMed and Ovid were the main engines used for primary literature searches; textbooks, review articles, and book chapters are examples of the other sources used for supplemental information.

Results: Regarding calcium absorption, it seems apparent that the absorption efficiency of all calcium salts, regardless of solubility, is fairly equivalent and not significantly less than the absorption efficiency of dietary calcium.

This study examined the impact of computers on rheumatologist-patient communication. Fifteen rheumatologist-patient consultations were videotaped and analysed qualitatively. Patients routinely ceased their reporting on a particular topic when the rheumatologist's body and gaze were reoriented toward the computer.
