Using the socio-ecological model, this study aims to understand factors associated with alcohol misuse in veterans of the New Zealand Defence Forces, and identify approaches for reducing harm. Using interviews, veterans were asked to recount their relationship to alcohol, and provide a narrative of its use before, during and after military service. Seven themes were identified including bars and drinking as 1) social hubs; and 2) social lubrication; providing others with 3) duty of care; the military 4) consequences of harmful drinking; and use of alcohol as 5) emotion regulation strategies; with the impact of that on 6) Civvy street, and 7) family impacts.

Barbed suture technology is becoming increasingly popular in plastic surgery and is now being used in body contouring surgery and facial rejuvenation. We describe the novel application of a barbed suture as a running tie-over dressing for skin grafts. The barbs act as anchors in the skin, so constant tensioning of the suture is not required.

Background: It has been suggested that abilities in nonsurgical tasks may translate to the surgical setting, with video gaming attracting particular attention because of the obvious similarities in the skills required. The aim of this study was to assign laparoscopic novices prospectively to receive a period of structured practice on the Nintendo Wii™ (Nintendo of America, Inc, Redmond, Washington) and compare their performance of basic laparoscopic tasks before and after this session to control subjects.

Methods: In all, 22 medical students with no prior laparoscopic or video game experience were recruited to the study.

Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of the conventional transrectal ultrasonographic (US) prostate volume formula and determine whether a more accurate volume formula, calculated on the basis of prostate shape as observed at planimetry, can be described for the majority of prostate glands.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study was institutional review board approved, with waiver of informed consent. A total of 138 consecutive patients who underwent prostate brachytherapy were included for analysis.
