Early recognition and treatment of Henoch-Schönlein purpura in children.

Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is characterised by a non-blanching rash, which commonly affects the lower limbs of children aged 3-15 years. It is the most common vasculitis in children. HSP often develops after an upper respiratory tract infection and is more likely to present in autumn, winter and spring.

Pre-hospital assessment of a child under one year old with fever.

Parents often bring children with a fever to primary and emergency care settings. This article uses a case study to explore the assessment of children with a fever in pre-hospital settings using the three-minute toolkit, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence fever guidelines and the baby check score. It also highlights some educational resources for parents, designed to help them recognise when to seek clinical advice for their children.

Use of antibiotics in the management of sore throat.

As the number of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria rises, it becomes crucial that decisions about the use of antibiotics are based on sound evidence. This article offers a case study to explore the treatment of patients with sore throat who present to minor injury settings. It describes some 'red flag' presentations, discusses the pros and cons of prescribing antibiotics for sore throat, and describes some scoring systems that can help differentiate between bacterial and viral throat infections.

Students' and teachers' views of written feedback at undergraduate level: a literature review.

Changes and sticking points in adult safeguarding: a discussion.

The care and treatment of vulnerable adults was the subject of regular public and media concern in 2011. This article discusses the potential impact of these concerns on community nursing practice and reflects on the ways in which such concerns may be discussed in professional development activities. It alerts nurses to the importance of considering the effects on patients and carers of exposure to negative findings from inquiries and inspections.

Future of BRD research: an animal health industry perspective.

Industry has made large investments into bovine respiratory disease (BRD) research historically, and will continue to do so, despite the apparent lack of progress, an uncertain regulatory environment, and increased competition for internal resources. Factors such as the growing demand for protein, and the ongoing consolidation and 'technification' of the beef sector globally suggest that the industry will continue to demand interventions that prevent disease, are more efficacious, can be easily administered, and positively affect meat quality. New products must also meet the regulatory requirements of safety and efficacy and anticipate the future needs of the numerous stakeholders in the global food chain.

Measurement of information and communication technology experience and attitudes to e-learning of students in the healthcare professions: integrative review.

Aim: This paper is a report of a review to describe and discuss the psychometric properties of instruments used in healthcare education settings measuring experience and attitudes of healthcare students regarding their information and communication technology skills and their use of computers and the Internet for education.

Background: Healthcare professionals are expected to be computer and information literate at registration. A previous review of evaluative studies of computer-based learning suggests that methods of measuring learners' attitudes to computers and computer aided learning are problematic.

An exploration of four web-based open and flexible learning modules in post-registration nurse education.

Unlabelled: This paper presents an exploratory evaluation of four newly developed web-based modules for post-registration nurses. The topics for the modules were: dermatology; diabetes; mentorship; and prescribing.
