Wonder with Care: How "Crip Participation" Engages Activism.

This essay explores how the authors' curatorial process has roots in wonder: how it is one of inquiry, beginning and ending with open questions. The authors describe how their "crip" curatorial methods can be used to refuse extractive practices that might result from a disengaged wonder and to generate exhibitions that hold both the viewers and the artists with the care necessary to move passive viewing into a reciprocal engagement that can lead to an activist turn. These curatorial methods acknowledge and embrace medical professionals as potentially fellow disabled people and view them as current or potential allies.

Land2Lab Project: Reflections on Learning about Mi'kmaw Foodways.

Land2Lab is an evolving community-based intergenerational program that brings together Elders and youth on the land and in the kitchen and lab to share and celebrate Mi'kmaw foodways. Rooted in an -Two Eyed Seeing (E-TES) perspective, which acknowledges both Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, the project to date has featured seasonal food workshops, involvement in a children's summer math camp, a food safety training workshop for teens, and the development of an online toolkit. The project was guided by the Mi'kmaw principle of , which reinforces respect for Mother Earth and stewardship of the land, water, and air for subsequent generations.

Developing a long-term follow up service for bariatric surgical patients in the community: Patient and professional perspectives.

Background: In the UK, bariatric surgical patients are followed up for 2 years post-operatively in hospital settings, before being discharged into General Practice for long-term follow-up. Presently, there is ambiguous guidance as to what should be included in a community-based bariatric surgical follow-up service. The aim of the study was to understand, from both patient and professional perspectives, what is needed to support the long-term management of bariatric surgical patients in community-based settings.

Pressure ulcer prevention in practice.

Pressure ulcer avoidance in the context of care has the potential to improve the quality and longevity of lives for those living in residential and non-residential care home settings. This paper reports on an educational intervention in the North East of England, which focused on the initial benchmarking of self-reported knowledge levels of healthcare workers, who regularly work with people living within this context. Using a longitudinal study design, a series of three questionnaires were used to collate data from research participants.

A systematic review of obesity as a barrier to accessing cancer screening services.

Introduction: Obesity is a known risk factor for the development of cancers, and a significant proportion of the population may be at risk of developing cancer owing to their weight status. There is acknowledged societal stigma towards people living with obesity, which can influence health behaviors and deter help seeking, such as cancer screening. Healthcare professionals' attitudes and views toward people living with obesity may adversely affect the patient-professional interface and treatment.

Novel pfk13 polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum population in Ghana.

The molecular determinants of Plasmodium falciparum artemisinin resistance are the single nucleotide polymorphisms in the parasite's kelch propeller domain, pfk13. Validated and candidate markers are under surveillance in malaria endemic countries using artemisinin-based combination therapy. However, pfk13 mutations which may confer parasite artemisinin resistance in Africa remains elusive.

Defining Clinical Public Health.

Purpose: To solve complex health issues, an innovative and multidisciplinary framework is necessary. The Clinical Public Health (CPH) Division was established at the University of Toronto (UofT), Canada to foster inte-gration of primary care, preventive medicine and public health in education, practice and research. To better understand how the construct of CPH might be applied, we surveyed clinicians, researchers and public health professionals affiliated with the CPH Division to assess their understanding of the CPH concept and its utility in fostering broad collaboration.

Evaluating a potential role for community pharmacists in post-bariatric patient nutritional support.

Physiological changes to the body from bariatric surgery necessitate lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation to prevent potential nutritional deficiencies. Presently, there is no consensus on appropriate long-term follow-up in community settings for people who have undergone bariatric surgery. Current UK guidelines recommend annual monitoring of nutritional status, but little else.

Exploring Food Guidance Approaches for Seniors in Antigonish, NS: Is There Still Gold at the End of the Rainbow?

As Canada rethinks approaches to food guidance, insights into the needs of seniors in rural communities are important to ensure their nutrition issues are addressed. This study aimed to explore the food guidance needs and wants of a group of seniors living in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Three focus groups were held with a total of 12 participants over the age of 65 years, living independently in the community.

Stronger Together: Use of Storytelling at a Dietetics Conference to Promote Professional Collaboration.

During a Dietitians of Canada conference session (2015), 4 facilitators drew upon "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (Alice) to engage participants in discussing the future of dietetic education. The aim was to feature Nova Scotia (NS) collaborative experiences as an example of dietetic education planning that could be implemented elsewhere. Three vignettes from the Alice story were chosen as metaphoric representations of dilemmas and assumptions commonly faced by dietetic educators.

Cell Signaling in Tenocytes: Response to Load and Ligands in Health and Disease.

Signaling in tenocytes during development, homeostasis and injury involves multiple and redundant pathways. Given that tendons transmit mechanical forces from muscle to bone to effect movement, a key function for tenocytes is the detection of and response to mechanical stimulation. Mechanotransduction involves matrix-integrin-cytoskeleton to nucleus signaling, gap junction intercellular communication, changes in intracellular calcium (Ca(2+)), activation of receptors and their pathways, and responses to biochemical factors such as hormones, growth factors, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and its derivatives, and neuromodulators.

Practitioner consensus on the determinants of capacity building practice in high-income countries.

Objective: To assess and develop consensus among experienced public health nutrition practitioners from high-income countries regarding conceptualisation of capacity building in practice, and to test the content validity of a previously published conceptual framework for capacity building in public health nutrition practice.

Design: A Delphi study involving three iterations of email-delivered questionnaires testing a range of capacity determinants derived from the literature. Consensus was set at >50% of panellists ranking items as 'very important' on a five-point Likert scale across three survey rounds.

Interprofessional collaborative patient-centred care: a critical exploration of two related discourses.

There has been sustained international interest from health care policy makers, practitioners, and researchers in developing interprofessional approaches to delivering patient-centred care. In this paper, we offer a critical exploration of a selection of professional discourses related to these practice paradigms, including interprofessional collaboration, patient-centred care, and the combination of the two. We argue that for some groups of patients, inequalities between different health and social care professions and between professionals and patients challenge the successful realization of the positive aims associated with these discourses.

New responsibilities in purchasing and developing services.

The role of nursing in the NHS commissioning structure in England is developing. Since April 2013 more than 200 clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), which comprise all GP practices in the locality, have taken on responsibility for health budgets in their areas. This article describes the challenges ahead and nurses' responsibilities in CCGs when working with local citizens and across the health and social care system to assure the delivery of high quality, safe services.

Public health nutrition workforce development in seven European countries: constraining and enabling factors.

Objectives: Little is known about current public health nutrition workforce development in Europe. The present study aimed to understand constraining and enabling factors to workforce development in seven European countries.

Design: A qualitative study comprised of semi-structured face-to-face interviews was conducted and content analysis was used to analyse the transcribed interview data.

Employers' perspectives of students in a master of public health (nutrition) program.

Efforts to support workforce development led to the launch of a new master of public health program aimed at improving access to graduate studies for practising nutrition professionals. The first cohort of students identified employer support as a key determinant of their success. In order to identify ways of addressing both student and employer needs, we explored the perspectives of students' employers.

Planning a graduate programme in public health nutrition for experienced nutrition professionals.

Objective: Public health renewal in Canada has highlighted the need for development and expansion of the public health nutrition workforce, particularly in northern and rural communities. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the planning of a more accessible graduate programme for experienced nutrition professionals. The planning effort was challenged by a short timeframe between programme approval and implementation and required intense collaboration with stakeholders and students.

Intensive diabetes management: negotiating evidence-based practice.

Purpose: An exploration was completed of health professionals' experiences implementing evidence-based guidelines that promote intensive management (IM) for people with diabetes.

Methods: In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 50 health professionals from across Canada. These professionals are considered to be opinion leaders in diabetes care.

The epidemiology of travelers' diarrhea in Incirlik, Turkey: a region with a predominance of heat-stabile toxin producing enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli.

This study evaluated travelers' diarrhea among US military personnel on short-term deployment to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, from June through September 2002. Upon reporting for care for travelers' diarrhea, subjects were enrolled into the study and completed a series of questionnaires and provided stool specimens for pathogen identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Fifty-three percent of the 202 participating subjects had a pathogen isolated from their stool.

Evaluation of a pilot arts and health module in a graduate community nutrition program.

Several health disciplines have incorporated the arts into professional education programs; however, little work has been done in the field of dietetics. A pilot arts module was implemented as part of a graduate education program in community nutrition. The course instructor developed a structured, open-ended questionnaire, which was administered to participating students before the educational module.

Public health nutrition practice in Canada: a situational assessment.

Objective: Renewed focus on public health has brought about considerable interest in workforce development among public health nutrition professionals in Canada. The present article describes a situational assessment of public health nutrition practice in Canada that will be used to guide future workforce development efforts.

Methods: A situational assessment is a planning approach that considers strengths and opportunities as well as needs and challenges, and emphasizes stakeholder participation.

IL-1beta decreases the elastic modulus of human tenocytes.

Cellular responses to mechanical stimuli are regulated by interactions with the extracellular matrix, which, in turn, are strongly influenced by the degree of cell stiffness (Young's modulus). It was hypothesized that a more elastic cell could better withstand the rigors of remodeling and mechanical loading. It was further hypothesized that interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) would modulate intracellular cytoskeleton polymerization and regulate cell stiffness.
