Cultural competence is a recognized standard in baccalaureate nursing education, but nursing programs are challenged by a predetermined course sequence and mandated requirements. Interaction with and immersion in a Spanish-speaking country have been found to increase knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to cultural competence. This article describes the development and implementation of a Spanish minor for nursing majors, a unique set of experiences with an educational focus on language and culture related to the Hispanic/Latino population.

Improving care at the end of life is a health priority. At least one-third of deaths in the United States occur in the hospital; nearly half of the Americans who die in the hospital will have spent time in the intensive care unit during the last 3 days of life. Critically ill patients and their families identify significant unmet spiritual, environmental, and communication needs.

Millennial students are often characterized as technology focused multitaskers, yet young nursing students are expected to focus on and thoughtfully engage with the person at the center of their caring efforts. Developing gratitude practices requires quiet contemplation and focus. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude in millennial nursing students may be one avenue to address concerns surrounding the provision of relationship based person-centered care by young nurses.
