As with phenotyping of any microscopic appendages, such as cilia or antennae, phenotyping of root hairs has been a challenge due to their complex intersecting arrangements in two-dimensional images and the technical limitations of automated measurements. Digital Imaging of Root Traits at Microscale (DIRT/μ) is a newly developed algorithm that addresses this issue by computationally resolving intersections and extracting individual root hairs from two-dimensional microscopy images. Two positional isomers, 4-methyl-2-((quinolin-6-ylimino)methyl)phenol (6-QMP) and 4-methyl-2-((quinolin-2-ylimino)methyl)phenol (2-QMP), have been synthesized to compare their fluorescence sensing properties. 6-QMP and 2-QMP have been synthesized by Schiff-base condensation between 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde and the respective amine (6-aminoquinoline for 6-QMP and 2-aminoquinoline for 2-QMP) under mild conditions. To facilitate the identification of contralateral breast cancer events for large cohort study, we proposed and implemented a new method based on features extracted from narrative text in progress notes and features from numbers of pathology reports for each side of breast cancer. Our method collects medical concepts and their combinations to detect contralateral events in progress notes. In addition, the numbers of pathology reports generated for either left or right side of breast cancer were derived as additional features.

Mesoporous silica functionalized with a 2-hydroxy-naphthyl moiety has been synthesized and characterized by standard techniques like powder X-ray diffraction, N adsorption/desorption studies, transmission electron microscopy and spectral studies like FT-IR, UV-visible, fluorescence and C and Si solid state NMR. The functionalized silica material showed significant enhancement in its emission intensity in the presence of Al ions whereas other metal ions could not bring about any increase in its emission intensity. They either quench the emission or do not alter the intensity significantly making the functionalized material a fluorescence chemosensor for Al.

In this context, serum- and glucocorticoid-induced kinase (SGK)1, a ubiquitously expressed kinase, is one of the primary aldosterone-induced proteins in the aldosterone-sensitive distal nephron.
