Literature review reveals that Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are electron deficient compounds due to the presence of highly electronegative groups. Hence, they are more amenable to anaerobic biodegradation rather than oxidative metabolism. However, the studies on PCBs bioremediation are more inclined towards aerobic treatment.
