Article Synopsis
  • A large part of our DNA comes from viruses that infected our ancestors millions of years ago, especially a group called HERV-K.
  • Scientists found new versions of these viruses in areas called pericentromeres on several human chromosomes, which are parts that help our cells divide.
  • The research shows that a specific virus named K222, which is related to the older K111 virus, may have mixed with different chromosome parts as humans evolved, suggesting this has happened many times over history.
