A novel mercury-resistant bacterium, designated strain DCL_24, was isolated from the legacy waste at the Daddu Majra dumping site in Chandigarh, India. It showed resistance up to 300 µM of inorganic mercury (mercuric chloride). The isolate was found to be a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, motile, and rod-shaped bacterium that can grow at 4 - 30 °C (optimum 25 °C), pH 6.
