Background: Meningococcal disease is a life-threatening illness that can cause sequelae such as neurological impairment, hearing loss, seizures, limb amputations, and scarring. Adolescents and young adults are at highest risk for contracting this disease which comes with a case-fatality ratio of 10-15%. Common serogroups in the United States are B, C, W, and Y, which are covered by two separate vaccines administered in a two-dose series.
