This report describes the interdisciplinary approach and solving algorithm of a DIN 9001:2000 certified tumor board in managing a giant-size type-B2 thymoma IIb in an elderly patient. The process of managing the thymoma with specialists of surgery, internal medicine, radiology, and pathology until finally extirpation and continuous follow-up is described. Respective computerized tomography scans, histology, macro-pathology, and operative pictures of the case are provided as well as an upto-date literature review.

Methods: Labial biopsy specimens from 17 patients with SS and 11 patients with non-autoimmunesicca syndrome were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for expression of the inducible proteasomal subunits ss1i, ss2i, and ss5i. The infiltrating subsets of lymphocytes were characterized using immunofluorescence stainings against the cell-surface markers CD20 and CD27.
Cleft Palate Craniofac J
January 2009
Objective: To document the genetic background of Pyrenees shepherd dogs as it relates to the incidence of cleft lip and/or cleft palate, to describe the phenotype, and to determine possible candidate genes.
Design: Pedigree analysis was performed and blood samples were taken from five affected pups, their siblings, and parents. Seven candidate genes were selected and linkage analysis was performed.
Aims: CD146 is a potentially metastasis promoting cell adhesion molecule and its expression has been described in various solid tumours. We aimed to evaluate the expression of CD146 in prostate cancer by immunohistochemistry in a clinically characterised study cohort to evaluate its prognostic properties.
Methods: We evaluated the CD146 protein expression using a polyclonal and a monoclonal antibody on 169 clinico-pathologically characterised cases.
Galectins have recently emerged as central regulators of the immune system. We have previously demonstrated that carbohydrate-dependent binding of galectin-2 induces apoptosis in activated T cells. Here, we investigate the potential therapeutic effect of galectin-2 in experimental colitis.

KPNA2 protein expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry in breast tissue samples, containing invasive carcinomas, DCIS, and adjacent histologically benign breast tissues. A polyclonal goat KPNA2 antibody was used for immunostaining of 83 clinicopathologically characterized cases.

The safe processing of potentially contaminated tissue material remains a challenge for histologic laboratories. Formic acid pretreatment is considered to be effective in prion inactivation.

We report a case of an anaplastic large cell lymphoma in a 72-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer treated with breast-ablative surgery and a subsequent silicon implant 32 years ago. Clinically, she presented with an ulceration of the skin, which had developed within a few months.

Because complement factors and leukocytes are present in synovial fluid, we tried to detect complement deposits and macrophages in menisci, which displayed degenerative changes. We therefore performed a retrospective analysis by immunohistochemical staining of C4d and CD68 in meniscal tissue derived from patients (n=15) who underwent meniscectomy because of meniscal tears and from three autopsy cases (n=3).

Since these histologic findings are nonspecific, determination of clinical and serologic abnormalities contribute to the diagnosis. The aim of this study was to identify a novel, disease-specific, immunologically relevant marker for SS.

Whether these parameters correlate with markers of liver cell integrity in an experimental model using pig livers and different preservation solutions was an aim of this study. Pig livers were flushed with either 4 degrees C Histidine-Typtophan-Ketoglutarate solution (HTK) (Custodiol), University of Wisconsin solution (ViaSpan), and hydroxyethyl starch, or 12 degrees C saline solution.

Experimental Design: AGR2 mRNA expression was assessed by reverse transcription-PCR in 25 breast cancer samples and normal tissues. A polyclonal rabbit AGR antiserum was used for immunohistochemistry on 155 clinicopathologically characterized cases.
Giant cell tumors (GCTs) of the bone are osteolytic neoplasms with variable degrees of aggressiveness. The aim of this study was the molecular characterization of GCT tissue. We established gene expression profiles and discovered a number of genes that have not been described in GCTs before.

Although many groups have described the presence of Tregs within inflammatory sites, it has not been shown that inflamed tissues are, indeed, the sites of active suppression of ongoing immune reactions. Here, by using alpha(E)+ effector/memory-like Tregs from fucosyltransferase VII-deficient animals, which lack E/P-selectin ligands and fail to migrate into inflamed sites, we analyzed the functional importance of appropriate Treg localization for in vivo suppressive capacity in an inflammation model.

Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether ACR is associated with depositions of complement split products and increased infiltration by B-lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages. A total of 35 liver biopsy specimens (ACR n=22, controls n=13) were analyzed by immunohistochemical single and double staining.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute cellular (CLR) and humoral liver allograft rejection (HLR) are the most important immunological obstacles to successful liver transplantation. In HLR, serum antibodies play the central pathogenetic role. In CLR, CD3+ T lymphocytes drive the destructive immune response.

An aberrant right subclavian artery arises as a separate vessel from the aortic isthmus and crosses to the right, behind the trachea. This variant is present in <1% of the normal population; however, in subjects with Down syndrome, an incidence between 19% and 36% was reported.
