Background: The value of therapeutic drug monitoring during azathioprine (AZA) therapy with respect to clinical outcomes has been convincingly demonstrated in recent meta-analyses. However, the association between AZA metabolites and the mucosal state in inflammatory bowel disease is largely unclear.
