Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates late-onset type 1 diabetes, focusing on the prevalence and characteristics of individuals diagnosed after age 30 who show severe insulin deficiency as measured by C-peptide levels.
  • Out of 583 participants with insulin-treated diabetes, 21% were classified as having type 1 diabetes; notably, 38% did not start insulin at diagnosis and many initially misidentified as type 2 diabetes.
  • Rapid insulin requirement was a strong indicator of severe insulin deficiency, with similarities found between late-onset and early-onset type 1 diabetes, although those diagnosed later had slightly lower genetic risk scores.
