Disgust is a vital emotion in the avoidance of illness. Human adults across cultures show disgust towards sources of potential contamination or pathogens, and elect to avoid their ingestion or even to look at them. Stomach rhythms appear to play an important role: disgust reduces normogastric power, and the pharmacological normalisation of gastric state reduces disgust avoidance.

In this study, we screened eight commercially available brands of -containing probiotic preparations and dietary supplements for resistance towards commonly administered antibiotics of different classes. According to disc diffusion results, most of the isolates were resistant to vancomycin and susceptible to penicillin-type antibiotics (ampicillin and amoxicillin), carbapenems (imipenem, meropenem, and ertapenem), and inhibitors of protein synthesis (chloramphenicol, erythromycin, tetracycline, clarithromycin, and linezolid). However, based on minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values, six strains were reconsidered as resistant to tetracycline.

Bacillus anthracis is the anthrax causative agent. For its epidemiology, it is important not only to identify the etiological agent but also to determine the patterns of its evolution and spread. Modern methods of molecular biology make it possible to detect a number of genetic markers suitable for indicating and differentiating the strains of B.

Purpose: Germline mutations in CHEK2 gene represent the second most frequent cause of hereditary breast cancer (BC) after BRCA1/2 lesions. This study aimed to identify the molecular characteristics of CHEK2-driven BCs.

Methods: Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) for the remaining CHEK2 allele was examined in 50 CHEK2-driven BCs using allele-specific PCR assays for the germline mutations and analysis of surrounding single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Introduction: There is some evidence suggesting a link between BRCA1/2 germline mutations and increased risk of gastric cancer.

Methods: Endoscopic screening for stomach malignancies was performed in 120 BRCA1 mutation carriers in order to evaluate the probability of detecting the tumor disease.

Results: No instances of gastric cancer were revealed at the first visit.

Background: The spectrum of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in Slavic countries is characterized by a high prevalence of founder alleles.

Methods: We analyzed a large data set of Russian breast cancer (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) patients, who were subjected to founder mutation tests or full-length BRCA1 and BRCA2 analysis.

Results: The most commonly applied test, which included four founder mutations (BRCA1: 5382insC, 4153delA, 185delAG; BRCA2: 6174delT), identified BRCA1 or BRCA2 heterozygosity in 399/8533 (4.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates genetic factors linked to hereditary breast cancer (BC) beyond the known predisposing genes, as these only account for less than half of the cases.
  • Whole exome sequencing was conducted on 49 Russian patients with a clinical history of genetic BC to identify candidate mutations, leading to a list of 229 possible mutations, with further analysis suggesting 6 mutations may increase BC risk.
  • The findings highlight a rare splicing variant in the USP39 gene as potentially significant for BC susceptibility, particularly associated with triple-negative breast tumors, prompting the need for additional research into these genetic variants.

Article Synopsis
  • Raw milk, meat, and plant materials are prone to contamination by pathogenic bacteria, making growth prevention a significant challenge in the food industry; fermentation using lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can help by eliminating bad microflora and suppressing pathogens.
  • Six novel LAB strains isolated from clover silage have shown strong antibacterial activity against biofilm-embedded pathogens like E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa, while also possessing beneficial probiotic properties and effectively eradicating existing biofilms.
  • The L. plantarum AG10 strain is highlighted for its potential as a starter culture in milk fermentation due to its effective probiotic capabilities and resistance to stomach conditions, aiming to reduce bacterial contamination from fouled equipment.

The study provides phenotypic and molecular analyses of the antibiotic resistance in 20 Lactobacillus strains including 11 strains newly isolated from fermented plant material. According to the results of disc diffusion method, 90% of tested lactobacilli demonstrated sensitivity to clindamycin and 95% of strains were susceptible to tetracycline, erythromycin, and rifampicin. Ampicillin and chloramphenicol were found to inhibit all bacteria used in this study.

colonizing gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts of humans and animals is widely used in manufacturing of fermented products and as probiotics. These bacteria may function as vehicles of antibiotic resistance genes, which can be transferred to pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, monitoring and control of transmissible antibiotic resistance determinants in these microorganisms is necessary to approve their safety status.

The aims of this in vivo study were to evaluate the impact of needle bevel design on patients' pain perception and the mechanical deformation of the needle tip after the injection. In a prospective single-blinded trial, 150 patients received conventional infiltration anaesthesia for dental treatment by one examiner. Patients were randomized for one out of three different needle bevel types (scalpel-designed bevel needle (SB), n=50; triple bevel needle (TB), n=50; regular bevel needle (RB), n=50).

Purpose: Large genomic rearrangements (LGRs) constitute a significant share of pathogenic BRCA1 mutations. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) is a leading method for LGR detection; however, it is entirely based on the use of commercial kits, includes relatively time-consuming hybridization step, and is not convenient for large-scale screening of recurrent LGRs.

Materials And Methods: We developed and validated the droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assay, which covers the entire coding region of BRCA1 gene and is capable to precisely quantitate the copy number for each exon.
