During the last 100 years, vaccine development has evolved from an empirical approach to one of the more rational vaccine designs where the careful selection of antigens and adjuvants is key to the desired efficacy for challenging pathogens and/or challenging populations. To improve immunogenicity while maintaining a favorable reactogenicity and safety profile, modern vaccine design must consider factors beyond the choice of target antigen alone. With new vaccine technologies currently emerging, it will be possible to custom-design vaccines for optimal efficacy in groups of people with different responses to vaccination.

It was shown for the first time that catalysts containing vanadium oxide as the active phase are more stable under oxidation conditions with sodium hypochlorite and retain their effectiveness at increased dosages of the oxidant and at high initial sulfur contents. In a similar way, the reactions of the oxonium derivatives of -carborane with FeCl in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of -BuOK lead to the corresponding stable oxonium derivatives iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) [8,8'-(RR'O)-3,3'-Fe(1,2-CBH)] (RR' = (CH), (CH)O(CH), (CH); R = R' = Et), which can be alternatively prepared by the reaction of the parent iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) with tetrahydrofuran or 1,4-dioxane in the presence of MeSO. The cyclic voltammetry studies of the synthesized iron(II) bis(dicarbollide) derivatives revealed that the introduction of amidinium and oxonium substituents leads to a significant increase in the Fe/Fe redox potential relative to the parent iron(II) bis(dicarbollide).

The significance of Yersinia pestis surface antigens in adhesiveness to specific bacteriophages has been studied with the use of two methodological approaches. It was shown that Ail protein immobilized on the surface of polystyrene microspheres (but not in the solution), can bind both the Pokrovskaya phage and pseudotuberculous diagnostic phage. Measuring of water transport selectively along the plant root plasmodesmata was achieved with paramagnetic complexes (PCs) of high relaxation efficiency. PCs penetrate into the intercellular space of root tissue, but not into cells, and accelerate the magnetic relaxation processes of intercellular water, thereby excluding the contribution of intercellular water to the registered NMR diffusion echo attenuation.
