Background: Esophageal cancer is a common type of cancer and serious bleeding from esophageal tumors can occur in routine clinical practice. This article reviews pseudo-accommodative intraocular lenses (IOLs), providing an analysis of the terminology used in this field of ophthalmology and describing the design of modern IOLs, the technological features used to achieve pseudo-accommodation that meets the needs of patients, particularly the new extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL technology. The article presents the main types of extended depth of focus IOLs, their description, advantages and disadvantages, as well as comparison with multifocal and monofocal IOLs based on clinical studies conducted in different countries.

A new surgical technique of transscleral-intracorneal suture fixation of intraocular lenses with suture ends located within the transparent corneal or corneal-limbal paracentesis is reported. This new technique significantly reduces scleral and conjunctival trauma, is minimally invasive, is simple to perform, is not associated with complicated intraocular surgical maneuvers, and precludes suture knot, flange, and suture-end erosion. The internal part of the corneal stroma or corneal-limbal area serves as a secure depot for suture-end fixation with durable resistance.

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is a procedure that aims to halt the progression of corneal ectasia in keratoconic eyes. It is achieved by inducing cross-links in the corneal stroma and extracellular matrix by exposing it to ultraviolet-A (370 nm) irradiation while it is filled with photosensitizer (riboflavin). According to the conventional protocol, the recommended de-epithelialized corneal thickness should be higher than 400 μm in order to avoid radiation damage to the corneal endothelium.

The aberrant accumulation of ubiquitinated protein aggregates in cells plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of several degenerative diseases, including Parkinson disease (PD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). In this study, we found that Ras GTPase-activating protein-binding protein 1 (G3BP1) inhibits ubiquitinated protein aggregations induced by p62 and USP10 in cultured cells. p62 is a ubiquitin receptor, and p62 and its binding partner USP10 have been shown to augment ubiquitinated protein aggregation.

Boundary conditions required for numerical solution of the Boltzmann kinetic equation (BKE) for mass/heat transfer between evaporation and condensation surfaces are analyzed by comparison of BKE results with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Lennard-Jones potential with parameters corresponding to solid argon is used to simulate evaporation from the hot side, nonequilibrium vapor flow with a Knudsen number of about 0.02, and condensation on the cold side of the condensed phase.

Using a TV device to study microcirculation in brain we found that intracerebral transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells to 12-months old rats led to a significant increase (circa 1,5-fold times) of microvascular density in pia tissue and to increased constriction reactions of pia arterioles in response to noradrenalin application on a brain surface. Both microvascular density and pia arterioles reactivity was completely preserved in aging until 22-24 months.

The ability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to differentiate into neuronal lineage determines the potential of these cells as a substrate for a cell replacement therapy. In this paper we compare the neurogenic potential of MSCs isolated from bone marrow (BMSC), subcutaneous adipose tissue (AD MSC) and menstrual blood (eMSC).
