Infections associated with medical implants due to bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation are a serious problem, leading to acute health risks to patients by compromising their immune system. Therefore, suppressing biofilm formation on biomedical implants is a challenging task, especially for overcoming the drug resistance of bacterial biofilms. Herein, a synergistic efficient surface coating method was developed to inhibit biofilm formation on a model medical implant by combining the antimicrobial property of trimethyl chitosan (TMC) with either 2D material graphene oxide (GO) or black phosphorus (BP) sheets using layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly.

A pioneering study on phytoplankton marker pigments, by adopting the HPLC-CHEMTAX analytical approach, was carried out in one of the major shellfish harvesting estuaries (Ashtamudi estuary-AE) on the southwest coast of India and also its adjacent nearshore waters (< 20 m depth) to study the dynamics of phytoplankton functional groups (PFGs). The AE, in general, appeared to be warm (> 29 °C) during the non-monsoon seasons, along with the prevalence of higher salinity (> 25) and NH-N (> 5 µM) levels. However, during the summer monsoon (SM), the prevailing substantial river influx converted the AE into a low salinity (< 10) dominated system, provided with enhanced levels of NO-N (4.

Recurrent jellyfish blooms and their impacts on ecosystem deliverables of coastal habitats have become a major ecological concern. In view of this, repercussions of a surge in the jellyfish population on the plankton community were studied in Cochin estuary (CE), the largest tropical estuary along the southwest coast of India. Evaluation of hydrographic attributes and plankton community of the CE during early and late pre-monsoon revealed a marked disparity in its hydrography which favoured an increase in jellyfish abundances during late pre-monsoon, eliciting distinct impacts on the plankton community.

Herein, we report the significant effects of natural organic matter contained in natural zeolite (Z-NOM) on the physicochemical characteristics of a Ni/Fe@natural zeolite (NF@NZ) catalyst and its decontamination performance toward the dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE). Z-NOM predominantly consists of humic-like substances and has demonstrable utility in the synthesis of bimetallic catalysts. Compared to NF@NZ (devoid of Z-NOM), NF@NZ had increased dispersibility and mobility and showed significant enhancement in the catalytic dechlorination of TCE owing to the encapsulation of Ni/Fe nanoparticles by Z-NOM.

Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Noctuidae: Lepidopetra) is a polyphagous pest of major crops grown in India. To prevent the damage caused by H. armigera farmers rely heavily on insecticides of diverse groups on a regular basis which is not a benign practice, environmentally and economically.

A paraduodenal hernia (PDH) is a rare type of internal hernia, which results from anomalous rotation and reduction of the midgut loop in the embryo. The diagnosis is often difficult due to nonspecific symptoms. The mortality from an acute internal hernia can be close to 50% when the diagnosis and definitive surgical treatment are delayed.

The study addressed the impact of the El Niño 2015-2016 on the ecosystem functioning and the subsequent effects on the distribution and community structure of zooplankton in the Kavaratti reef, a prominent coral atoll in the tropical Indian Ocean. The elevated ocean temperature (SST) associated with El Niño resulted in a mass bleaching event affecting > 60% of the live corals of the Kavaratti atoll. The concomitant changes observed in the nutrient concentration, coral health, and phytoplankton of the reef environment during the course of the El Niño led to discernible variations in the zooplankton community with markedly higher abundance and heterogeneity in distribution during the peak period of El Niño compared to its waning phase.

El Niño, an interannual climate event characterized by elevated oceanic temperature, is a prime threat for coral reef ecosystems worldwide, owing to their thermal threshold sensitivity. Phytoplankton plays a crucial role in the sustenance of reef trophodynamics. The cell size of the phytoplankton forms the "master morphological trait" with implications for growth, resource acquisition, and adaptability to nutrients.

Background: Proportion of elderly is increasing among the total population of Kerala, and mental health problems of this group are unique.

Objectives: To assess the clinical and sociodemographic profile of patients attending Psychogeriatric Clinic in a tertiary care center and to study the correlation of sociodemographic and clinical variables with psychiatric diagnoses in this population.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients, who attended the Psychogeriatric Clinic of a tertiary care center over a period of 1 year, was done.

In the search of efficient anticancer agents, here, new 5-(4-alkylbenzyledene)thiazolidine-2,4-dione derivatives () have been successfully synthesized and characterized and are evaluated for anticancer and antimicrobial activities using DNA cleavage studies. In vitro studies on anticancer activity of compound (NSC: 768619/1) was done against the full panel of 60 human tumor cell lines. The five-level dose activity results revealed that, the compound was active against all the cell lines, it has shown potential activity against leukemia SR (GI: 2.

An immunobiosensor using a piezo electric (PZ) crystal was developed and standardized for foot and mouth disease (FMD) diagnosis and virus typing. A 6MHz quartz crystal was used as the frequency determining element. Foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) type specific antibody raised in rabbits/monoclonal antibody was coated on the crystal surface and the resonance measured.

Antibody levels against pneumolysin, a virulence factor in pneumococcal infections were evaluated by a neutralization test, using crude pneumolysin. A study population of 28 hospitalised children with culture proven pneumococcal meningitis and pneumonia were tested for detection of antipneumolysin antibodies in their serum. Results were compared with age and sex matched controls who were admitted with infections other than pneumococcal.
