Background: HIV treatment programs in Africa have implemented centralized testing for routine viral load monitoring (VLM), which may result in specimen processing delays inhibiting timely return of viral load results. Decentralized, point-of-care (PoC) VLM is a promising tool for expediting HIV clinical decision-making but remains unavailable in most African settings. We qualitatively explored the perceived feasibility and appropriateness of PoC VLM to address gaps along the viral load monitoring continuum in rural Uganda.

Gender-based violence (GBV) research in public health has historically paid close attention to gender as a system of oppression, with less attention paid to the intersections between gender and other oppressive systems such as colonialism, white supremacy, and capitalism. In 2019, we adapted and pilot-tested an individual-level evidence-based sexual violence resistance intervention for university-attending women in Eswatini. We conducted a qualitative assessment of our adapted intervention's acceptability and feasibility using a critical pedagogy lens to explore how power operated in delivering an empowerment intervention, using in-depth interviews with intervention participants and facilitators.

Background: There is limited study of persons deemed "harder to reach" by HIV treatment services, including those discontinuing or never initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART). We conducted narrative research in southern Uganda with virologically unsuppressed persons identified through population-based sampling to discern longitudinal patterns in HIV service engagement and identify factors shaping treatment persistence.

Methods: In mid-2022, we sampled adult participants with high-level HIV viremia (≥1000 RNA copies/mL) from the prospective, population-based Rakai Community Cohort Study.

Long-acting injectable antiretroviral treatment (LAI ART), such as a bimonthly injection of cabotegravir/rilpivirine, is a promising HIV treatment option. LAI ART may particularly benefit people who are reluctant to initiate or are poorly adherent to daily oral pills and not virally suppressed. However, the acceptability and feasibility of LAI ART among individuals with viremia in Africa has not been well studied.

COVID-19 testing is an important risk mitigation strategy for COVID-19 prevention in school settings, where the virus continues to pose a public health challenge for in-person learning. Socially vulnerable school communities with the highest proportion of low-income, minority, and non-English speaking families have the least testing access despite shouldering a disproportionate burden of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Through the Safer at School Early Alert (SASEA) program, we investigated community perceptions of testing in San Diego County schools, with a focus on barriers and facilitators from the perspective of socially vulnerable parents and school staff.

DNAM-1 is an activating immunoreceptor on T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. Expression levels of its ligands, CD155 and CD112, are up-regulated on tumor cells. The interaction of DNAM-1 on CD8+ T cells and NK cells with the ligands on tumor cells plays an important role in tumor immunity.

Mouse peritoneal macrophages consist of two subsets: large peritoneal macrophages (LPMs) and small peritoneal macrophages (SPMs), defined as CD11bF4/80 and CD11bF4/80 cells, respectively. We reveal that SPMs, but not LPMs, have the ability to present antigens to naïve CD4 T cells. Coculture of SPMs with naïve ovalbumin (OVA) specific CD4 T cells (OT-II) in the presence of OVA peptide effectively induced CD4 T cells priming.

Lung cancer accounts for the highest death rate among cancers worldwide, with most patients being diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), urging more effective therapies. We report that JK273, a pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine analog, which inhibits α4 integrin signaling, showed a selective cytotoxic effect against HCI-H460 NSCLC cells, with an IC of 0.98 ± 0.

DNAM-1 is an activating receptor expressed on NK cells and T cells and plays an important role in cytotoxicity of these cells against target cells. Although the role of DNAM-1 in the function of T cells and NK cells has been well studied, the expression and function of DNAM-1 on myeloid cells have been incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated expression of DNAM-1 on monocyte subsets in mouse peripheral blood and found that only inflammatory monocytes (iMos), but not patrolling monocytes (pMos), expressed high levels of DNAM-1.
