Comprehensive analyses and characterization of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in Vietnamese children.

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a fatal haematological disorder with diverse aetiology. This prospective study was undertaken to characterize HLH cases in Vietnamese children. Clinical and laboratory data, genetic analyses and outcome of the HLH patients were analysed.

Brain cortical mapping by simultaneous recording of functional near infrared spectroscopy and electroencephalograms from the whole brain during right median nerve stimulation.

To investigate relationships between hemodynamic responses and neural activities in the somatosensory cortices, hemodynamic responses by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded simultaneously while subjects received electrical stimulation in the right median nerve. The statistical significance of the hemodynamic responses was evaluated by a general linear model (GLM) with the boxcar design matrix convoluted with Gaussian function. The resulting NIRS and EEGs data were stereotaxically superimposed on the reconstructed brain of each subject.

Avian reoviruses (ARVs) are pathogens that cause significant morbidity among commercial poultry. ARVs are prototypic representatives of non-enveloped viruses that can cause cell-cell fusion. They belong to the Reoviridae family, which contains many highly pathogenic viruses.

Anatomical and clinical studies of the supraclavicular flap: analysis of 103 flaps used to reconstruct neck scar contractures.

Background: The supraclavicular flap is an excellent flap that has been used widely, but its vascular reliability remains unclear. In this article, the authors report the results of their anatomical studies on 40 flaps from 20 preserved cadavers and their clinical studies of 103 supraclavicular flaps in 101 patients.

Methods: In their anatomical study, the authors analyzed the important anatomical features that are useful for harvesting flaps.

Disruption of SEMA4D ameliorates platelet hypersensitivity in dyslipidemia and confers protection against the development of atherosclerosis.

Objective: In dyslipidemic states, platelets become hyperreactive, secreting molecules that promote atherosclerosis. We have shown that the semaphorin family member, sema4D (CD100), is expressed on the surface of platelets and proposed that its role includes promoting thrombus growth by binding to nearby platelets and endothelial cells, both of which express sema4D receptors. Here we tested the hypothesis that deleting sema4D will attenuate the adverse consequences of dyslipidemia on platelets and the vessel wall.

Background And Purpose: Adult neurogenesis occurs throughout life in the subgranular zone and the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Deficient neurogenesis may be responsible for deficient hippocampal functions in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). T-817MA [1-{3-[2-(1-Benzothiophen-5-yl)ethoxy] propyl}-3-azetidinol maleate] is a newly synthesized agent for AD treatment with neuroprotective effects against toxicity from amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta) and actions promoting neurite outgrowth in vitro.

Effects of standard and supratherapeutic doses of nelfinavir on cardiac repolarization: a thorough QT study.

This was a randomized, 4-way crossover, third-party-blinded study in 68 healthy subjects to assess the effect of nelfinavir on QTc interval. Treatments included (A) nelfinavir 1250 mg every 12 hours on days 1-4, (B) nelfinavir 1250 mg every 12 hours on days 1-3 plus 3125 mg on day 4, (C) placebo, and (D) moxifloxacin 400 mg every 24 hours on days 1-4. Pharmacokinetics and triplicate 12-lead electrocardiograms were performed over 12 hours on days 1 and 4.

Understanding African American men's perceptions of racism, male gender socialization, and social capital through photovoice.

In this study we used a participatory qualitative research approach--photovoice--to collect information about African American men's perceptions of the factors that influenced their own health and the health of their communities. Photovoice was conducted as part of the "Men as Navigators (MAN) for Health" project, an evaluation of a male lay health advisor (LHA) intervention in central North Carolina. Twelve African American men living in both urban and rural communities took photographs and discussed the photos in six photo discussion sessions.

In Silico Enhanced Restriction Enzyme Based Methylation Analysis of the Human Glioblastoma Genome Using Agilent 244K CpG Island Microarrays.

Genome wide methylation profiling of gliomas is likely to provide important clues to improving treatment outcomes. Restriction enzyme based approaches have been widely utilized for methylation profiling of cancer genomes and will continue to have importance in combination with higher density microarrays. With the availability of the human genome sequence and microarray probe sequences, these approaches can be readily characterized and optimized via in silico modeling.

The human hippocampus is critical for learning and memory. In rodents, hippocampal pyramidal neurons fire in a location-specific manner, forming relational representations of environmental cues. The importance of glutamatergic systems in learning and in hippocampal neural synaptic plasticity has been shown.

Towards a more comprehensive understanding of cancer burden in North Carolina: priorities for intervention.

Objective: To apply 4 measures of population burden in examining cancer burden in North Carolina and to identify priorities for intervention.

Methods: Four measures were used: incidence, mortality, prevalence, and years of potential life lost (YPLL). The North Carolina Central Cancer Registry provided summary data on incidence and mortality and record-level data that were examined using SEER*Stat software to calculate prevalence.

Assignment of avian reovirus temperature-sensitive mutant recombination groups E, F, and G to genome segments.

Avian reoviruses (ARV) are less well understood than their mammalian counterparts. ARV are ubiquitous in commercial poultry and frequently isolated from acutely infected chickens. We previously described isolation of ARV temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants after nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis of wild-type ARV138, their assignment to 7 recombination groups (A-G), and genetic mapping of mutants in groups A-D to specific gene segments.

A structural approach to examining prostate cancer risk for rural southern African American men.

Physical, cultural, and social factors influence health risk and behavior, but few have explored how the environmental context affects African American men's prostate cancer screening and treatment. This paper describes a structural analysis of data from eight focus groups of rural, southern African American men (n=66). A structural approach highlights the interrelationships between individuals, the health service system, and community factors that directly and indirectly affect screening and treatment for prostate cancer.

Pharmacokinetics of 6-hydroxybuspirone and its enantiomers administered individually or following buspirone administration in humans.

The objective of this study was to assess the pharmacokinetics of 6-hydroxybuspirone (6OHB) when given orally via three forms: racemate (BMS-528215), S-enantiomer (BMS-442606) and R-enantiomer (BMS-442608), versus following the administration of buspirone. A double-blind, randomized, four-period, four-treatment, crossover study balanced for residual effects in healthy subjects was conducted (n=20). Subjects received single 10 mg doses of each compound in a randomized fashion with pharmacokinetics determined over a 24 h period.

Atelectatic children treated with intrapulmonary percussive ventilation via a face mask: clinical trial and literature overview.

Background: Persistent atelectasis in children is lacking a gold standard treatment. Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV) is presented as a promising chest physiotherapy technique in the treatment of atelectasis. This study aimed to follow the evolution of atelectasis resolution with noninvasive IPV in young children and to detect eventual adverse effects.

Background: Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) has revolutionised the management of venous thromboembolism (VTE). An important feature of the use of LMWH is the ability to manage acute VTE in the home. This study examined the outcomes of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) who were transferred to Hospital in the Home (HIH) within 24 hours of presentation for treatment with LMWH.

Two major types of this enzyme have been discovered to date: PurH in Bacteria and Eukarya and PurO in Archaea. The structure of the MTH1020 gene product from Methanothermobacter thermoautotrophicus was previously solved without functional annotation but shows high amino acid sequence similarity to other PurOs.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive decline due to neuronal loss and neural network dysfunction. It has been postulated that progressive neuronal loss in AD is consequence of the neurotoxic properties of the amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta). In the present study, we investigated the effect of T-817MA (1-{3-[2-(1-benzothiophen-5-yl)ethoxy] propyl}-3-azetidinol maleate), a newly synthesized neurotrophic compound, on place learning deficits in rats with hippocampal damages.

Calibration of a passive sampling device for time-integrated sampling of hydrophilic herbicides in aquatic environments.

Two types of solid-phase materials, a styrenedivinylbenzene copolymer sorbent (embedded in a SDB-XC Empore disk) and a styrenedivinylbenzene copolymer sorbent modified with sulfonic acid functional groups (embedded in a SDB-RPS Empore disk), were compared as a receiving phase in a passive sampling device for monitoring polar pesticides. The SDB-XC Empore disk was selected for further evaluation, overlayed with either a polysulfone or a polyethersulfone diffusion membrane. The target herbicides included five nonionized herbicides (simazine, atrazine, diuron, clomazone, and metolachlor) and four phenoxy acid herbicides (dicamba, (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid [2,4-D], (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid [MCPA], and triclopyr) with log octanol/water partition coefficient (log K(OW)) values of less than three in water.

Optimisation of the separation of herbicides by linear gradient high performance liquid chromatography utilising artificial neural networks.

An artificial neural network (ANN) was employed to model the chromatographic response surface for the linear gradient separation of 10 herbicides that are commonly detected in storm run-off water in agricultural catchments. The herbicides (dicamba, simazine, 2,4-D, MCPA, triclopyr, atrazine, diuron, clomazone, bensulfuron-methyl and metolachlor) were separated using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography and detected with a photodiode array detector. The ANN was trained using the pH of the mobile phase and the slope of the acetonitrile/water gradient as input variables.

Reconstruction of neck scar contractures using supraclavicular flaps: retrospective study of 30 cases.

Background: The supraclavicular flap is used to cover chin and neck region defects. Its main vascular supply is the supraclavicular artery, and it can be harvested as either a skin pedicled flap or an island flap (vascular pedicled flap). The island flap has a wide rotation arc, and both the color and texture match are better for reconstructing contour-sensitive areas such as the chin and neck than those of free flaps harvested from distant sites.
