Teaching webside manner: development and initial evaluation of a video consultation skills training module for undergraduate medical students.

Background: Video consultations are increasingly used to communicate with patients, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, training in video consultation skills receives scant attention in the literature. We sought to introduce this important topic to our undergraduate medical school curriculum.

Experiences of wearing support garments by people living with a urostomy.

Background: support garments are commonly worn by people with a urostomy but there are no published data about their experiences of doing so.

Aims: to identify the views of people living with a urostomy on the role of support garments.

Methods: a cross-sectional survey of the stoma population's experiences of support garments was conducted in 2018.

A pragmatic multicentre randomised controlled trial comparing stapled haemorrhoidopexy with traditional excisional surgery for haemorrhoidal disease: the eTHoS study.

Background: Haemorrhoids are a benign anorectal condition and are highly prevalent in the UK population. Treatments involve clinic-based procedures and surgery. The surgical procedures available include stapled haemorrhoidopexy (SH) and traditional haemorrhoidectomy (TH), and over 25,000 operations are performed for haemorrhoids annually in the UK.

Development of a Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Liver Model for Preoperative Planning.

Introduction: Liver surgery is widely used as a treatment modality for various liver pathologies. Despite significant improvement in clinical care, operative strategies, and technology over the past few decades, liver surgery is still risky, and optimal preoperative planning and anatomical assessment are necessary to minimize risks of serious complications. 3D printing technology is rapidly expanding, and whilst appliactions in medicine are growing, but its applications in liver surgery are still limited.

Comparison of stapled haemorrhoidopexy with traditional excisional surgery for haemorrhoidal disease (eTHoS): a pragmatic, multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

Background: Two commonly performed surgical interventions are available for severe (grade II-IV) haemorrhoids; traditional excisional surgery and stapled haemorrhoidopexy. Uncertainty exists as to which is most effective. The eTHoS trial was designed to establish the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of stapled haemorrhoidopexy compared with traditional excisional surgery.

Co-designing inflammatory bowel disease (Ibd) services in Scotland: findings from a nationwide survey.

Background: The Scottish Government's ambition is to ensure that health services are co-designed with the communities they serve. Crohn's and Colitis UK and the Scottish Government acknowledged the need to review and update the current IBD care model. An online survey was conducted asking IBD patients about their experiences of the NHS care they receive.

Nicorandil, Gastrointestinal Adverse Drug Reactions and Ulcerations: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Nicorandil is a popular anti-anginal drug in Europe and Japan. Apart from some common adverse drug reactions (ADR), its safety is satisfactory. Several reports have suggested a link between nicorandil, gastrointestinal (GI) ulceration and fistulas.

Background: Recruitment to randomised controlled trials (RCTs) is a perennial problem. Calls have been made for trialists to make recruitment performance publicly available. This article presents our experience of recruiting to a pilot RCT of cardiac rehabilitation for patients with bowel cancer with an embedded process evaluation.

Grossly delayed massive subcutaneous emphysema following laparoscopic left hemicolectomy: A case report.

Introduction: Surgical emphysema is a known early complication of laparoscopic surgery, common during upper gastrointestinal and gynaecological surgery; the authors present the first case of delayed subcutaneous emphysema following a laparoscopic left hemicolectomy.

Presentation Of Case: A 52-year-old woman underwent a laparoscopic left hemicolectomy for a sigmoid malignancy; on the third post-operative day after an uneventful procedure, she developed a massive surgical emphysema involving her face, neck and chest with associated pneumoperitoneum but without any evidence of pneumothorax. A gastrograffin enema ruled out an anastomotic leak.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition with an unpredictable disease course. Rates of anxiety and depression among IBD patients in relapse (active disease symptoms) as well as in remission are higher than in the general population. Previous studies suggest that the prolonged effect of pain, anxiety, distress and depression have a detrimental effect on patients'quality of life (QoL).

Complications of stomas: their aetiology and management.

The formation of a stoma is an essential part of many colorectal operations. Despite the frequency with which these surgeries are performed and the number of specialists involved in stoma care, complications are still common. This article investigates the most common complications, explains the reasons for their occurrence and suggests potential management options.

Assessment of causal link between psychological factors and symptom exacerbation in inflammatory bowel disease: a protocol for systematic review of prospective cohort studies.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease is an idiopathic chronic disease that affects around 28 million people worldwide. Symptoms are distressing and have a detrimental effect on patients' quality of life. A possible link between exacerbation of symptoms and psychological factors has been suspected but not established.

Different forms of helper tolerance to carcinoembryonic antigen: ignorance and regulation.

Purpose: Understanding the mechanisms of immune tolerance to tumor-associated antigens (TAA) is an important step in the design of cancer immunotherapy. The aim was to determine how T helper (Th) cell tolerance is mediated for a prototypic TAA, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA).

Experimental Design: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 50 healthy volunteers were stimulated with CEA, and the type and fine specificity of any Th cell responses were identified.

Flat adenomas.

This article was presented at the conjoint CSSA and RACS (colorectal section) spring meeting Queensland, Australia, September 2004. The adenoma-carcinoma sequence describes a succession of events from polypoid adenoma to colorectal cancer. However, this model only accounts for up to two-thirds of colorectal cancers.

Malignant progression of anal intra-epithelial neoplasia.

Background: Anal intra-epithelial neoplasia (AIN) is believed to be a precursor to squamous cell carcinoma of the anus. The risk of developing anal cancer in patients with AIN, although known to occur, has been thought to be relatively low. This study reviews our experience with AIN, reviewing the incidence and risk factors for development of invasive malignancy and the outcome of present management strategies.
