Lung exposures to dusts, pollutants, and other aerosol particulates are known to be associated with pulmonary diseases such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. These health impacts are attributed to the ability of aerosol components to induce pulmonary inflammation, which promotes tissue remodeling, including fibrosis, tissue degradation, and smooth muscle proliferation. Consequently, the distribution of these effects can have a significant impact on the physiologic function of the lung.

We report the pathologic features, local inflammatory response immunophenotype, and molecular identification results of cerebral nematodiasis in a young sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii) from Texas. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of cerebral nematodiasis by Parelaphostrongylus tenuis in a sitatunga, a bovid species introduced into the USA, and the first characterization of the local inflammatory response immunoprofile in this condition. A molecular identification method based on formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded-polymerase chain reaction was described.

The migration of cancer cells is highly regulated by the biomechanical properties of their local microenvironment. Purpose: To study the use of quality indexes based on ratios of absorbed doses in water at two different depths to characterize x-ray beams of low and medium energies.

Methods: A total of 55 x-ray beam spectra were generated with the codes XCOMP5R and SPEKCALC and used as input of a series of Monte Carlo simulations performed with PENELOPE, in which the percentage depth doses in water and the kQ,Q0 factors, defined in the TRS-398 protocol, were determined for each beam. Some of these calculations were performed by simulating the ionization chamber PTW 30010.

Muscle development in childhood and muscle regeneration in adults are highly regulated processes that are necessary for reaching and maintaining optimal muscle mass and strength throughout life. Muscle repair after injury relies on stem cells, termed satellite cells, whose activity is controlled by complex signals mediated by cell-cell contact, by growth factors, and by hormones, which interact with genetic programs controlled by myogenic transcription factors. Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) play key roles in muscle development and help coordinate muscle repair after injury, primarily by stimulating the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-Akt signaling pathway, and both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that Akt kinase activity is critical for optimal muscle growth and regeneration.

The effects of four prebiotics (fructo-oligosaccharide, Bio-MOS, transgalacto-oligosaccharide and GroBiotic-A) on digestive enzymes and intestinal morphology were studied in juvenile hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops × M. saxatilis) and red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) using two separate 8-week feeding trials. Red drum were fed experimental diets with the four prebiotics each individually supplemented at 1% and hybrid striped bass were fed diets supplemented with GroBiotic-A at 1 and 2%.

A simple analytical expression aiming to calculate the backscatter factor used in dosimetry protocols to determine the absorbed dose in water for low energy X-rays beams is presented. This expression is based on the linear dependence of the backscatter factor with the generating potential, for fixed values of the half-value layer. The results of a recent work in which 74 X-ray beams with different spectroscopic characteristics, generated with the code (xcomp5r) and transported with the Monte Carlo code (penelope) have been used.
