We show that crucian carp (Carassius carassius) living in normoxic (aerated) water have gills that lack protruding lamellae, the primary site of O(2) uptake in fish. Such an unusual trait leads to a very small respiratory surface area. Histological examination showed that the lamellae (secondary lamellae) of these fish were embedded in a cell mass (denoted embedded lamellae).

A dense poplar plantation (1 x 1 m) was exposed to a [CO2] of 550 ppm in Central Italy using the free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) technique. Three species of Populus were examined, namely P.

These data, confirmed in the international literature, led them to develop a new therapeutic approach. The aim of this study was to achieve intestinal control and avoid recurrence of FC in children through use of medical-psychological treatment.

Recurrence of strictures, particularly with ileocolonic disease, often requires resection of lengthy segments of bowel, potentially resulting in short bowel syndrome. Different techniques of strictureplasty, such as those described by Mikulicz, Finney and Michelassi, are used in adults.

The most commonly used indicators of ionizing radiation exposure are cytogenetic measures and survival parameters. All these methods have their advantages, disadvantages and uncertainties, such that better biological estimators of the absorbed dose, especially in the low dose range, are being sought. In this study we analyzed apoptosis and several proteins involved in the regulation of apoptosis as possible indicators of irradiation after relatively small doses (0.

They typically develop rapidly and may show cellular atypia and infiltration like cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas, but they finally regress spontaneously. This benign lesion shows a high degree of genetic instability as assessed by comparative genomic hybridization, with 35.

Our results from 2721 such patients have been presented previously and for the first time in any common cancer, showed conclusively that different gene mutations have different impacts on outcome, even when the mutations occur at the same site on the genome. To explore the effect of Ki-ras mutations at different stages of colorectal cancer, more patients were recruited to the database, which was reanalysed when information on 4268 patients from 42 centres in 21 countries had been entered.

Testicular tissue with both normal morphology and DNA content was obtained from necro-donors and fixed in Bouin's solution. A TdT-mediated dUTP end-labelling method (TUNEL) was used for the detection of apoptotic cells.

Bianchi proposed esophagogastric dissociation (EGD) as an alternative to fundoplication and gastrostomy. The authors compared these 2 approaches.

These may be important in the development and progression of colorectal carcinomas. Chromosomal aberrations detected by comparative genomic hybridization in 67 sporadic colorectal carcinomas were examined for their possible associations with patient survival.

Materials And Methods: The cell lines examined were: Epstein Barr virus transformed lymphoid ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) cell lines, GM00717C, homozygous, and GM00736A, heterozygous, for ATM; human pro-B lymphoblastic leukaemia, Reh; murine L5178Y lymphoma sublines, LY-R and LY-S. Assays performed following X-irradiation with doses from 0.
• Data from 13 long-term (> 1 yr), field-based studies of the effects of elevated CO concentration ([CO ]) on European forest tree species were analysed using meta-analysis and modelling. Meta-analysis was used to determine mean responses across the data sets, and data were fitted to two commonly used models of stomatal conductance in order to explore response to environmental conditions and the relationship with assimilation. • Meta-analysis indicated a significant decrease (21%) in stomatal conductance in response to growth in elevated [CO ] across all studies.

Methods: A group of 96 diabetic subjects (41 males and 55 females) were studied, aged between 3 and 19 years old. The following parameters were examined: weight, stature, 5 skin folds, 7 circumferences, bioelectric impedance, arterial pressure, cholesterolemia, triglyceridemia, insulin dose, HbA1c and duration of disease.
Background: Pancreatic and duodenal injuries occur rather infrequently and the incidence ranges between 1% and 12% of all abdominal injuries. The high rate of mortality and morbidity (10-40%) depends on associated complication rate of all intra-abdominal organs (90%).
Methods: Twenty-five cases of pancreatic and duodenal injuries observed between 1987 and 1997, with an incidence of 0.
The melanocyte-inhibiting tripeptide (MTP) pyroGlu-Phe-GlyNH2 is present in tissue cultures of non-transformed melanocytes and melanoma cells and influences melanocyte growth in vitro. The objective of the present study was to investigate a possible effect of MTP on the in vivo growth of B16A2, a monoclonal experimental melanoma. The B16A2 clone was established by the limited dilution technique.

Ki67 immunoreactivity and AgNOR counts, including mean AgNOR counts (mAgNOR) and the percentage of nuclei with more than one AgNOR (pAgNOR > 1), were used as proliferative parameters. The apoptotic index (AI) was assessed using the TUNEL method.

Methods: Bax, Bcl-2, p53, and the level of spontaneous apoptosis were evaluated in formalin fixed, paraffin embedded pretreatment specimens from 85 T1-4 squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the tongue by immunohistochemical methods. The percentage of apoptotic cells labeled by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP labeling (TUNEL) method was expressed as an apoptotic index (AI).
Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is used to detect amplified and/or deleted chromosomal regions in tumours by mapping their locations on normal metaphase chromosomes. Forty-five sporadic colorectal carcinomas were screened for chromosomal aberrations using direct CGH. The median number of chromosomal aberrations per tumour was 7.

Therefore, we studied cell growth of three pairs of drug resistant and sensitive leukemia cell lines (KG1a, K562 and HL60) exposed to three different inhibitors of Pgp. The resistant KG1a and K562 sublines, which expressed high levels of Pgp, responded to low doses of the cyclosporin SDZ PSC 833, the cyclopeptolide SDZ 280-446, and the cyclopropyldibenzosuberane LY335979 with a dose-dependent growth inhibition.

The sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) was used to measure over 500 human semen samples from two independent studies: Study I, 402 samples from 165 presumably fertile couples wishing to achieve pregnancy over 12 menstrual cycles; Study II, samples from 115 patients seeking fertility counselling. The SCSA measures susceptibility to DNA denaturation in situ in spermatozoa exposed to acid for 30 s, followed by acridine orange staining. SCSA data from the male partners of 73 couples (group 1) achieving pregnancy during months 1-3 of Study I were used as the standard of 'sperm chromatin compatible with high fertility' and were significantly different from those of 40 couples (group 3) achieving pregnancy in months 4-12 (P < 0.

Introduction: Imaging methods such as defecography, anal US and perineography, combined with manometry, now permit to identify a growing number of causes of anorectal and pelvic floor deficiency. Fecal incontinence patients can thus be approached correctly relative to both diagnosis and treatment. We investigated the role of these techniques in the work-up of fecal incontinence.
