In the present pilot study, we examined the presence of serglycin in lung, breast, prostate, and colon cancer and evaluated its expression in cell lines and tissues. We found that serglycin was expressed and constitutively secreted in culture medium in high levels in more aggressive cancer cells. It is worth noticing that aggressive cancer cells that harbor KRAS or EGFR mutations secreted serglycin constitutively in elevated levels.

Background: Notch may behave as an oncogene or a tumor suppressor gene in lung cancer cells. Notch receptor undergoes cleavage by enzymes, including γ-secretase, generating the active Notch intracellular domain (NICD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of DAPT, a γ-secretase inhibitor, in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells, as well as the impact of epidermal growth factor (EGF) that is over-expressed by NSCLC cells, on Notch signaling.

Physiological levels of wild-type (wt) apolipoprotein E (apoE) in plasma mediate the clearance of cholesterol-rich atherogenic lipoprotein remnants while higher than normal plasma apoE concentrations fail to do so and trigger hypertriglyceridemia. This property of wt apoE reduces significantly its therapeutic value as a lead biological for the treatment of dyslipidemia. Recently, we reported the generation of a recombinant apoE variant, apoE4 [L261A, W264A, F265A, L268A, V269A] (apoE4mut1) with improved biological functions.
