Changes in Functional Capacity of Heart Failure Patients Following a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program on functional capacity in patients with heart failure at a high-complexity hospital in the city of Cali during the period from 2017 to 2023.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive study that included 127 patients over 18 years of age diagnosed with heart failure, who completed 36 rehabilitation sessions with complete records of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), anthropometric and physiological measurements at the beginning and end of the program. Categorical variables were summarized as absolute frequencies and percentages.

Translating global evidence into local implementation through technical assistance: a realist evaluation of the Bloomberg philanthropies initiative for global Road safety.

Background: Traffic-related crashes are a leading cause of premature death and disability. The safe systems approach is an evidence-informed set of innovations to reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths. First developed in Sweden, global health actors are adapting the model to improve road safety in low- and middle-income countries via technical assistance (TA) programs; however, there is little evidence on road safety TA across contexts.

The American Journal of Critical Care's Junior Peer Reviewer program aims to mentor novice reviewers in the peer review process. To grow their critical appraisal skills, the participants take part in discussion sessions in which they review articles published in other journals. Here we summarize the articles reviewed during the second year of the program, which again focused on the care of critically ill patients with COVID-19.

The Junior Peer Reviewer program of the American Journal of Critical Care provides mentorship in the peer review process to novice reviewers. The program includes discussion sessions in which participants review articles published in other journals to practice and improve their critical appraisal skills. The articles reviewed during the first year of the program focused on caring for patients with COVID-19.

Assessing impacts of redeveloping public housing communities on obesity in low-income minority residents: Rationale, study design, and baseline data from the Watts Neighborhood Health Study.

Introduction: Obesogenic built- and social-environments in low-income and minority communities are often blamed for the higher rates of obesity in this population, but existing evidence is based largely on observational studies. This study leverages a natural experiment created by the redevelopment of a public housing community to examine the impact of major improvements to the housing, built, and social environments on obesity among residents.

Methods/design: The study design is a natural experiment where residents from the redeveloped community (treatment group) will be compared to those from a similar community (control group) in terms of their pre/post changes in primary outcomes using annual longitudinal data on a cohort of residents.

ZnO Films Incorporation Study on Macroporous Silicon Structure.

In the present work, we developed hybrid nanostructures based on ZnO films deposited on macroporous silicon substrates using the sol-gel spin coating and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) techniques. The changes in the growth of ZnO films on macroporous silicon were studied using a UV-visible spectrometer, an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD analysis revealed the beneficial influence of macroporous silicon on the structural properties of ZnO films.

Preoperative Weight Loss as a Predictor of Bariatric Surgery Postoperative Weight Loss and Complications.

Background: The association between preoperative weight loss and bariatric surgery outcomes remains unclear. We explored the utility of preoperative weight loss as a predictor of postoperative weight loss success. Additionally, we examined the association of preoperative weight loss with perioperative complication rates.

The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs after sleeve gastrectomy.

Background: The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is discouraged after bariatric surgery. The effect of NSAIDs on patients who have undergone sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is not well studied. Moreover, the rate of NSAID use after SG is unknown.

Kidney Donor Profile Index in a Transplant Center in Mexico.

Background: The Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) was created in 2014 to measure the likelihood of graft failure for a given donor compared with the median kidney donor from the previous year. This scale is based on the American population only. Mexico is one of the countries with greater incidence of chronic kidney disease, a long waiting list, and not enough kidney donors with KDPI smaller than 80%.

Robotic intracorporeal ileal conduit: Technical aspects.

To present a review of the technical aspects of robotic intracorporeal ileal conduit  (IC) reconstruction after robot assisted radical cystectomy (RARC). METHODS: A non-systematic review is performed in order  to summarize technical aspects on robot assisted ileal conduit procedure following radical cystectomy in patients with muscle invasive bladder cancer.  RESULTS: Radical cystectomy with pelvic lymph node dissection and urinary diversion is the gold-standard therapy for localized muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

Case: 80 years old male with morbid obesity (BMI 45) and several other comorbidities, with history of an umbilical hernia and obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms in acute urinary retention. PSA was 7 ng/dl, DRE demonstrates a >100gr prostate gland.

Gastric cancer is one of the most aggressive malignancies affecting humankind. With almost a million cases globally, it sits in fifth position in terms of incidence, and third in terms of mortality. The progression of this disease is slow, with prolonged and sequential precancerous stages including chronic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia, and finally gastric cancer.

Robotic Management of Rectourethral Fistulas After Focal Treatment for Prostate Cancer.

Objective: To describe our management strategy for rectourethral fistula (RUF) after focal treatment for prostate cancer (PCa) using 2 cases as an example. Almost 50% of RUFs are associated with energy treatment modalities for PCa. The adjacent damage to healthy tissue along with limited pliability of it makes the success of the repair troublesome.

Community resources support adherence to treatment for childhood cancer in El Salvador.

Objective: In order to reduce nonadherence and treatment abandonment of children with cancer in El Salvador, institutions located nearby the patients' homes were involved to provide support. Methodological approach: Health clinics and municipality offices in the patients' communities were asked to assist families who were not promptly located after missing hospital appointments, or those whose financial limitations were likely to impede continuation of treatment. Data was collected about the number of contacted institutions, the nature of help provided, staff's time investments, and parents' perceptions about the intervention.

Interventions targeting absences increase adherence and reduce abandonment of childhood cancer treatment in El Salvador.

Background: In El Salvador, about 200 new cases of pediatric cancer are diagnosed each year, and survival rates approach 70%. Although treatment is available at no cost, abandonment of therapy has remained at a steady yearly rate of 13% during the past decade. A time sensitive adherence tracking procedure (TS-ATP) was recently implemented to detect missed appointments, identify their causes, and intervene promptly.

Hausdorff Distance evaluation of orthodontic accessories' streaking artifacts in 3D model superimposition.

The aim of this study was to determine whether image artifacts caused by orthodontic metal accessories interfere with the accuracy of 3D CBCT model superimposition. A human dry skull was subjected three times to a CBCT scan: at first without orthodontic brackets (T1), then with stainless steel brackets bonded without (T2) and with orthodontic arch wires (T3) inserted into the brackets' slots. The registration of image surfaces and the superimposition of 3D models were performed.

Nutritional status at diagnosis is related to clinical outcomes in children and adolescents with cancer: a perspective from Central America.

Background: The prevalence of malnutrition in children may exceed 50% in countries with limited resources. The aims of this study were to assess nutritional status at diagnosis in children and adolescents with cancer, and to correlate it with clinical outcomes in the Spanish speaking countries of Central America that formed the AHOPCA (Asociacion de Hemato-Oncologia Pediatrica de Centro America) consortium.

Methods: Patients aged 1-18 years, diagnosed with cancer between 1st October 2004 and 30th September 2007, were eligible for study.

Galanin-mediated anxiolytic effect in rat central amygdala is not a result of corelease from noradrenergic terminals.

Galanin is colocalized extensively with norepinephrine in brain. Although this suggests possible activity-dependent neurotransmitter interactions, the functional significance of such colocalization remains elusive. Previously, we showed that enhancing stress-activation of the noradrenergic system by yohimbine pretreatment released galanin in central amygdala, attenuating the anxiety-like behavioral response to stress on the elevated plus-maze.

Role of brain norepinephrine in the behavioral response to stress.

The brain noradrenergic system is activated by acute stress. The post-synaptic effects of norepinephrine (NE), exerted at a cellular or neural circuit level, have been described as modulatory in nature, as NE facilitates responses evoked in target cells by both excitatory and inhibitory afferent input. Over the past few years, we have undertaken a series of studies to understand how these cellular modulatory effects of NE, elicited by acute stress, might translate into modulation of the behavioral-affective components of the whole-animal response to stress.

Administration of the galanin antagonist M40 into lateral septum attenuates shock probe defensive burying behavior in rats.

Galanin (GAL) has been implicated in modulating anxiety, although a precise role remains unclear. Previous studies revealed anxiolytic effects, anxiogenic effects, or no effect, depending on the test, brain region, route of drug administration and context. We have shown previously that microinjection of the GAL antagonist M40 into central amygdala blocked an anxiolytic response to acute stress on the elevated plus maze when rats were pretreated with yohimbine, suggesting an anxiolytic effect of GAL.
