The hippocampus possesses anatomical differences along its long axis. Here, we explored the functional specialization of the human hippocampal long axis using network-anchored precision functional MRI in two independent datasets (N = 11 and N = 9) paired with behavioral analysis (N = 266 and N = 238). Functional connectivity analyses demonstrated that the anterior hippocampus was preferentially correlated with a cerebral network associated with remembering, while the posterior hippocampus selectively contained a region correlated with a distinct network associated with behavioral salience.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: The global prevalence of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Liver Disease is dramatically increasing with the diffusion of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs). The aim of the present study was to assess the natural course of liver cirrhosis, in terms of decompensation, development of hepatocellular carcinoma and mortality, in relation to the presence of CMRFs (type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, arterial hypertension, low HDL levels, hypertriglyceridemia).
Patients: 667 patients with liver cirrhosis (50 with CMRFs and without non-metabolic aetiological factors, 167 with non-metabolic aetiological factors and without CMRFs, and 450 with both non-metabolic aetiological factors and at least one CMRF) followed at the University and General Hospital of Padua, Italy, from 1998 to 2022, were included.

In Italy, a phased screening programme starting with individuals born between 1969 and 1989 has been implemented.
Aim: To assess the prevalence of patients with positive viraemia identified through a universal screening campaign conducted among hospitalised patients at our centre during the calendar year 2022.
Hypoalbuminemia is a risk factor for mortality in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and in those undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), since it represents a biomarker of post-operative delayed functional recovery of the graft. Despite albumin infusion during and after OLT is frequently adopted in recipients with hypoalbuminemia, it remains unclear whether this procedure could improve post OLT clinical outcomes. Observational studies indicated that treatment with albumin after OLT might be beneficial in reducing ascites and acute kidney injury (AKI) development.

Human albumin solution is a commonly used therapeutic agent because of its ability to expand plasma volume and improve oncotic pressure in various clinical settings, such as in patients with cirrhosis and sepsis, whose management is a major challenge. Despite the lack of evidence for the superiority of human albumin solutions compared with crystalloids in improving major outcomes, short-term administration of human albumin solution appears to be more effective than both saline and plasmalyte in recovering systemic hemodynamics and achieving a lower daily net fluid balance in patients with cirrhosis and sepsis-induced hypotension. The use of 25% human albumin solution could also effectively manage ascites in patients with cirrhosis, reducing the volume of fluids administered and allowing a faster achievement of the plasma target concentration.

In combination with the instability at the film front, the spreading front acquires a flowerlike pattern. The emergence of the two-layer structure is attributed to micelles within the oil film that yield an oscillating disjoining pressure.

This work investigates the design of stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions (PEs) for transdermal drug delivery applications, by exploring the impact of stabilising microgels size and interactions on their rheological and release properties. Temperature-responsive poly(-isopropylacrylamide) microgels modified with 1-benzyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide (pNIPAM--BVI) are synthesized in varying sizes and used to stabilise jojoba oil-in-water concentrated emulsions. The results reveals two distinct behaviours: for small microgels (∼300 nm), the PEs exhibit a smooth, uniform structure characterised by a mild yield stress, characteristic of soft glassy systems.

Today, the advent of new pharmacologic strategies for the control of hemostasis and the efficacious antiviral therapies against hepatitis C virus and hepatitis B virus have significantly reduced this risk. However, the definitive success for liver health in this clinical setting is also influenced by other factors, such as the severity of liver disease at the time of hepatitis B virus/hepatitis C virus antiviral therapy and the exposure to highly prevalent factors of chronic liver damage (eg, metabolic dysfunction and/or alcohol) that can cause a residual risk of complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma, portal hypertension, and liver insufficiency.

We aimed to develop and externally validate a model for predicting the risk of MDRO infections in patients with cirrhosis.
Methods: We included patients with cirrhosis and bacterial infections from two prospective studies: a transcontinental study was used for model development and internal validation (n = 1302), and a study from Argentina and Uruguay was used for external validation (n = 472).
Sarcopenia and frailty are common complications in patients with cirrhosis evaluated for liver transplantation (LT). Although the negative impact of sarcopenia on patient's outcome has been well studied, the prognostic role of frailty is not as clear. Furthermore, after decompensation, the risk of developing BIs further increases in an ominous vicious circle. BIs may be subtle, and they should be ruled out in all patients at admission and in case of deterioration.
