Objectives: Hexavalent chromium (CrVI)-exposure of suckling rats has been shown to delay tooth eruption. However, the effects of CrVI-exposure on bone formation at the base of the alveolus, which provides a motive force for tooth eruption in the early stages of the process, remain unknown. The present work sought to evaluate the effect of CrVI-exposure on bone formation at the base of the alveolus during the intraosseous stage of tooth eruption in suckling rats, using histomorphometric and immunohistochemical studies.

Although it has been demonstrated that exposure of lactating rats to CrVI delays tooth eruption, the effects of CrVI exposure on bone remodeling in the developing alveolus during tooth eruption remain unknown. Our purpose was to analyze the effect of CrVI in the alveolus of the first lower molar of rats. Thirty-two suckling Wistar rats were divided into two groups.

Background: Heavy metals including Cr VI are present in inadequately treated effluents that contaminate drinking water. Hence, Cr VI exposure can affect children through intake of breast milk from an exposed mother or bottle-feeding formula prepared with contaminated water. To date, there are no reports on the effects of Cr VI exposure on tooth formation processes concomitant to tooth eruption.

The in vivo response of osteocytes to different force magnitudes soon after they are applied remains to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to examine the early effects of applying a very light (LF: 0,16 N) and a very strong (SF: 2,26 N) orthodontic force during one hour on apoptosis and osteopontin (OPN) expression on alveolar bone osteocytes, in rats. Results: LF: compared to the control group, they showed a significant increase in OPN expression, and a significant decrease in the number of TUNELpositive osteocytes.

Unlabelled: Increasing duration of type 1 diabetes mellitus alters bone metabolism. Clinical studies and experimental studies in long bones of rats with experimentally induced diabetes have reported a decrease in bone density. Few studies have explored this diabetes related alteration in the maxillae.

Improperly treated hexavalent chromium-containing industrial wastes contaminate drinking water, potentially affecting children taking breast milk or baby bottles prepared with infant formula. Thus, the aim of the present work was to determine the effect of this toxic on bone activity in the developing alveolus during tooth eruption of suckling Wistar rats intoxicated with potassium dichromate. Experimental animals received a daily dose of 12.

Lack of mechanical stimulation is known to cause disuse osteopenia in bones. However, experimental models for disuse osteopenia on bones other than jawbones are not applicable to jawbones. The little available information in this field has been applied to the study of overeruption of teeth lacking antagonists.

The occurrence of very early morphological changes in the osteocyte lacuno-canalicular network following application of tensile and/or compressive forces remains unknown to date. Thus, the aim of this study was to perform a morphological and morphometric evaluation of the changes in the three-dimensional structure of the lacuno-canalicular network and the osteocyte network of alveolar bone that take place very early after applying tensile and compressive forces in vivo, conducting static histomorphometry on bright-field microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy images. Our results showed that both the tensile and compressive forces induced early changes in osteocytes and their lacunae, which manifested as an increase in lacunar volume and changes in lacunar shape and orientation.

The osteocyte lacuno-canalicular system (OLCS) is a large network intercommunicating the lacunae and canaliculi which contain the osteocytes and their cytoplasmic processes within the mineralized bone matrix. The vitality and functioning of the osteocytes and cytoplasmic processes depend upon this intercommunication. To date, the 3-dimensional features of OLCS in the alveolar bone have not been studied; therefore the aim of this study was to use confocal scanning microscopy to do so.

Article Synopsis
  • Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is a surgical technique that encourages bone lengthening by gradually separating a fractured area.
  • Previous studies on DO in craniofacial bones often had complicated setups and resulted in minimal bone growth, prompting this research to develop a more effective model using edentulous (toothless) rats.
  • The study successfully created a custom distraction device and implemented a specified timeline for bone growth to demonstrate that this model can effectively produce sufficient quality and quantity of new bone for further research on bone regeneration.

Introduction: Patients with type 1 diabetes have shown decreased bone mineral density (BMD) values. The need for orthodontic treatment in diabetic patients is usually associated with occlusal problems and the occurrence of abnormalities in the development of the jaws. The aim of this study was to analyze bone response of insulin-treated and untreated diabetic rats after applying orthodontic forces.

Unlabelled: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a protein that increases vascular permeability and induces the proliferation, migration and survival of endothelial cells. Bisphosphonates (BPs) are antiresorptive drugs that are widely used in the treatment of bone metabolism diseases and bone metastases. Since 2003, cases of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) have been reported.

Not only workers employed at industrial plants are exposed to intoxication with the element they manipulate, the population at large is also at risk of suffering health problems caused by contaminating wastes inadequately treated for their safe disposal. As a result certain toxic substances, such as hexavalent chromium, has reached the general population including children. The present study sought to evaluate the effect of intoxication with hexavalent chromium on body and mandibular growth and tooth eruption in suckling Wistar rats.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, for the first time, the histomorphometry of the cellular and lacunar features of the osteocytes of alveolar bone in acute streptozotocin-induced diabetic insulin-treated or untreated rats. Eighteen male Wistar rats weighing 200 to 260 g were assigned to one of the following groups: I) control group (C), II) diabetic group (DBT), and III) insulin treated diabetic group (DBT+INS). Experimental diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg of body weight of streptozotocin.

Several studies have confirmed a decrease in the quality and quantity of milk of mothers with diabetes during lactation. However, it remains unclear how maternal diabetes affects the offspring specifically during lactation. The aim of this study was to evaluate body and mandibular growth and tooth eruption in pups suckling from diabetic dams.

Renal failure (RF) is a serious disease of relatively high incidence, known to cause bone alterations. RF patients frequently suffer anemia, which is usually treated with iron. Given that iron overload inhibits bone formation, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of iron on the subchondral bone of rat tibiae, using a model of renal failure.

The present experimental study addresses the issue of the development and size of root resorption areas in molars of rats submitted to orthodontic forces of 51 or 75 g and the induction of periodontal disease by placing a cotton ligature around the cervix of the first upper molars for 48 hours. Immediately on removal of the ligature or 48 hs later we put an orthodontic device in place. The device comprised two steel bands.

Background: Chronic destructive periodontal disease is characterized by gingival inflammation, periodontal pocket formation, and bacterial plaque that lead to alveolar bone destruction. Polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes (PMNs) are the first line of defense against infection caused by dental plaque bacteria. Renal patients present functional abnormalities of PMN, including impaired chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and intracellular killing of bacteria.

Renal failure is a serious disease of a relatively high incidence, which among other lesions, causes bone alterations. These patients frequently suffer from anemia that is generally treated with iron. Given that iron overload inhibits bone formation, our aim was to evaluate the effect of iron on the interradicular bone of animals with experimental renal failure.
