Article Synopsis
  • Recurrent respiratory infections (RRIs) are common in children, affecting about 25% of those under 1 year and 6% in the first 6 years, typically resolved by age 12.
  • While most cases are mild, RRIs can significantly impact quality of life for both children and their families, leading to higher medical and social costs.

Background: Despite the fact that vaccines save 2-3 million lives worldwide every year, a percentage of children are not getting appropriately vaccinated, thus leading to disease outbreaks. One of the major reasons of low vaccine uptake in Europe is vaccine hesitancy, contributing to the recent measles outbreaks. Monitoring of vaccine hesitancy is valuable in early identification of vaccine concerns.

Background: Sleep in childhood and adolescence is crucial for mental and physical health; however several researches reported an increasing trend towards a sleep deprivation in this age. Due to the lack of recent epidemiological studies in Italy, the aim of our study was to depict sleep habits and patterns in Italian children aged 1-14 years and to evaluate their relationships with video devices use (TV, tablet, smartphone, PC) and evening/night child activities.

Methods: A structured interview was conducted during 2015 by 72 Family Pediatricians in 2030 healthy children aged 1-14 years by a cross-sectional survey named "Ci piace sognare".

The 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) produced a significant herd protection in unvaccinated adult population mostly because of pneumococcus carriage decrease in vaccinated children. It is not known if the 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine can give similar effect on adults. Aims of the work were to evaluate whether the 6 additional serotypes are present in nasopharynx of children and serotype distribution in invasive pneumococcal infections (IPD) in adults.

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are very common in pediatric age and reach a peak in the first 4 years of life, especially in children attending daycare. Pidotimod, a synthetic immunostimulant, may reduce the incidence of ARTIs in children with predisposing risk factors. Nevertheless studies on healthy children are presently lacking.

Article Synopsis
  • - Most primary care pediatricians in Northern Italy are aware of and regularly use nasal saline irrigation (NSI) for respiratory issues in pre-school children, with a high response rate of 98.8% to a questionnaire about its use.
  • - NSI is primarily viewed as both a preventive and therapeutic measure, with isotonic solutions being the preferred choice, and most pediatricians recommending administration via nasal spray or bulb syringe.
  • - The study found that younger and female pediatricians are more likely to prescribe NSI, with a majority of them effectively communicating its benefits to parents.
