One of the main challenges in the clinical management of dengue is the early identification of cases that could progress to severe forms of the disease. A biomarker that may enable this identification is the presence of genetic polymorphisms in genes associated with immune responses. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review of the Latin American literature on these genes.

In Colombia, dengue is a disease of great impact due to its morbidity and mortality, however, studies on the effects of the economic burden at the local level are scarce. Therefore, our study sought to describe the economic burden of dengue epidemics between 2010 and 2016 in the State of Meta, Colombia. A longitudinal study was performed using information from the records of the epidemiological information system (Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia en Salud Pública - SIVIGILA), and the indicator of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) was determined as an estimator of the burden of dengue.

Background: Treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) is recommended in pregnant women and prior to urologic procedures with anticipated mucosal disruption. However, there is still insufficient evidence of the usefulness of treating ASB prior to urologic procedures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to ascertain the risk of infections in patients undergoing urologic surgery based on the presence of ASB.

Background: Although the factors associated to bacterial resistance in patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) have been studied in pregnant, fertile age women, patients with spinal cord injury, and those with urogynecological disorders, nothing is known about the factors associated with multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in patients with ASB and planned urological procedures. This study therefore sought to identify the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with MDR bacteria in a cohort of patients with ASB scheduled for urological procedures.

Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study on a cohort of patients with ASB and planned urological procedures at 3 Colombian medical centers.

Article Synopsis
  • Colombia has a significant population of young people who inject drugs (PWID), but there is a lack of studies on the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in this group.
  • A study conducted in 2014 with 918 PWID from four Colombian cities found that 27.3% were HCV seropositive, with higher rates among those under 25 and individuals engaging in risky injection behaviors.
  • While the overall HCV prevalence is lower than in other countries, the study highlights the importance of addressing specific demographics and risky practices to inform prevention efforts in Colombia.
