Objective: To assess the utility of an electronic clinical decision support tool for management of depression in primary care.
Method: This prospective study was conducted in a national network of ambulatory practices over a 1-year period (October 2007-October 2008). A clinical decision support tool was embedded into the electronic health record of 19 primary care practices with 119 providers.
Purpose: National guidelines recommend screening all persons with depression for bipolar disorder (BPD); one way to facilitate screening is through the use of electronic health records (EHRs). This study examined the impact of an EHR-based screening and decision support tool on diagnosis and treatment of BPD among patients diagnosed with depression in primary care offices.
Methods: This nonrandomized, controlled trial was conducted in a national network of offices using EHRs.
Bile acid sequestrants (BAS) have shown antidiabetic effects in both humans and animals but the underlying mechanism is not clear. In the present study, we evaluated cholestyramine in Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats. Although control ZDF rats had continuous increases in blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and serum glucose and a decrease in serum insulin throughout a 5-week study, the cholestyramine-treated ZDF rats showed a dose-dependent decrease and normalization in serum glucose and HbA1c.

Senescent cells are metabolically active but lack the capacity to replicate. Evolutionary theories suggest that cellular senescence is related to the organismal decline occurring in aging organisms.

P2Y receptors have been reported to modulate gastrointestinal functions. The newest family member is the nucleotide-sugar receptor P2Y14. P2ry14 mRNA was detected throughout the rat gut, with the highest level being in the forestomach.

In a guinea pig model, initially selected to study the role of an inflammatory cytokine cascade in mustard gas induced lung injury, we observed significant body weight gain in guinea pigs exposed to an intratracheally injected single dose of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, a mustard analog. The body weight gain was not associated with any apparent change in appetite.

Since PPARgamma is expressed selectively in distal nephron epithelium, we studied the mechanism of PPARgamma agonist-induced fluid retention using male Sprague-Dawley rats treated with either vehicle or GI262570 (farglitazar), a potent PPARgamma agonist. GI262570 (20 mg/kg/day) induced a plasma volume expansion.
