Single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is a recent bariatric surgery technique, highly effective in terms of weight loss. Nevertheless, data regarding the impact of SADI-S at mid-long term (after >5 years of follow-up) are scarce. Article Synopsis
  • Current guidelines suggest that individuals over 65 with type 2 diabetes should be screened annually for cognitive impairment, often using the mini-mental state evaluation (MMSE) as a primary tool.
  • Researchers conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of retinal microperimetry for monitoring cognitive function over a year in these patients, finding that while MMSE scores decreased in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), retinal sensitivity remained stable but gaze fixation worsened.
  • The study concludes that retinal microperimetry, particularly gaze fixation measurements, could be a useful method for tracking cognitive decline in older patients with type 2 diabetes.

Article Synopsis
  • The Diabetes Specific Dementia Risk Score (DSDRS) was evaluated to see if it effectively screens for cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients aged over 65.
  • A study involved 112 T2D patients, leading to 82 being referred for further assessment; however, many declined due to comorbidities or lack of interest.
  • The results showed that the DSDRS is a valuable tool for identifying cognitive impairment, as a significant portion of referred patients were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or dementia.

Background: Laparoscopic single anastomosis duodenoileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is a recently developed one- or two-stage operation based on biliopancreatic diversion that is used to treat morbid obesity. Some midterm outcomes suggest that malabsorption is a possible complication following the procedure. Therefore, conversion to a less malabsorptive procedure may be required.
