Article Synopsis
  • Aberrant cell fate transitions can lead to cancer, and p63 is identified as a key factor in determining cell type in esophageal development, specifically between squamous and neuroendocrine lineages.
  • Deleting p63 in developing mice and human stem cells leads to increased neuroendocrine differentiation, suggesting that this transcription factor is crucial for maintaining proper cell identity.
  • In esophageal neuroendocrine carcinoma, p63 is silenced by EZH2-mediated trimethylation, but reactivating p63 can promote a return to squamous cell characteristics, highlighting its role in cancer progression.

We examined whether religious involvement was associated with cognitive function among older adults in the 2006-2020 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. Using growth curve analysis, we found the association between religious involvement and cognition varied by facet of religious involvement and race and Hispanic ethnicity. Attending religious services with friends was associated with higher initial levels of cognitive function (b = 0.

The mangrove red snapper, Lutjanus argentimaculatus, is a marine food fish of economic and aquaculture importance. The application of genomic selection-based breeding programs for this species is limited by the absence of a reference genome and transcriptome profiles. The current study attempted to fill this void by generating genomic and transcriptomic resources for red snapper.

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% has been studied. The effect of MWCNTs on thermal, viscoelastic, and electric properties in the TPU matrix was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and by impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the thermal, electrical, and viscoelastic properties, such as the glass transition temperature, shifted towards high temperatures.

COVID-19 breakthrough infection (BTI) can occur despite vaccination. Using a multi-centre, prospective, observational Canadian cohort of people with HIV (PWH) receiving ≥2 COVID-19 vaccines, we compared the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) and receptor-binding domain (RBD)-specific IgG levels 3 and 6 months post second dose, as well as 1 month post third dose, in PWH with and without BTI. BTI was defined as positivity based on self-report measures (data up to last study visit) or IgG data (up to 1 month post dose 3).

The numbers of organ donors in Canada and the USA fall short of increasing demand, resulting in increased morbidity, poor health outcomes, higher medical costs and death of many individuals waitlisted for transplantation. In the US, since 2013 when the US HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act lifted the ban on organ donation between people living with HIV, the option of using organs from People with HIV became a reality. In Canada, HIV diagnosis was an exclusion criterion to organ donation until 2017, when permission was granted if requirements for 'exceptional distribution' could be met.

Introduction: Alterations in the gut immune system have been implicated in various diseases. The challenge of obtaining gut tissues from healthy individuals, commonly performed via surgical explants, has limited the number of studies describing the phenotype and function of gut-derived immune cells in health.

Methods: Here, by means of recto-sigmoid colon biopsies obtained during routine care (colon cancer screening in healthy adults), the phenotype and function of immune cells present in the gut were described and compared to those found in blood.

Innate immune signaling in the central nervous system (CNS) exhibits many remarkable specializations that vary across cell types and CNS regions. In the setting of neuroinvasive flavivirus infection, neurons employ the immunologic kinase receptor-interacting kinase 3 (RIPK3) to promote an antiviral transcriptional program, independently of the traditional function of this enzyme in promoting necroptotic cell death. However, while recent work has established roles for neuronal RIPK3 signaling in controlling mosquito-borne flavivirus infections, including West Nile virus and Zika virus, functions for RIPK3 signaling in the CNS during tick-borne flavivirus infection have not yet been explored.

Salivary duct carcinoma with rhabdoid features (SDC-RF) is a rare form of salivary gland neoplasm that was recently described. We report a case of SDC-RF of the parotid gland with loss of E-cadherin and decreased β-catenin expression in a 73-year-old male who presented with right facial/neck swelling and intermittent pain. Morphologically, the tumor presented with a discohesive infiltrate of isolated and cords of pleomorphic round cells containing moderate amount of eosinophilic to fine-vacuolated cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei infiltrating through fibroadipose tissue and salivary parenchyma.

Background: The Indian white shrimp, Penaeus indicus a native species of India, is important brackishwater aquaculture species. Shrimps are euryhaline in nature and they regulate osmotic and ionic concentrations by osmoregulatory process. However, variations in abiotic factors such as salinity result in stress to the shrimps during culture period affecting their growth and immunity.

Article Synopsis
  • HIV reservoirs persist in various tissues even during effective antiretroviral therapy, with significant differences observed between anatomical compartments and individuals.
  • Intact HIV genomes are primarily found in secondary lymphoid organs, such as the spleen and lymph nodes, comprising 2% and 25% of proviruses in the study participants.
  • Identical HIV genomes are frequently found across multiple tissues, indicating that infected cells can expand, migrate, and circulate among different anatomical sites.

Background: Finding a cure for HIV is challenged by persisting reservoirs, the mapping of which necessitates invasive procedures. Inviting people with HIV (PWHIV) at the end of life to donate body specimens post-mortem through research autopsies is a novel approach, raising ethical concerns.

Objective: This case study aims to explore the motivations, barriers, and facilitators of a terminally-ill Canadian PWHIV who requested medical assistance in dying (MAID) and expressed interest in donating his body for HIV cure research.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the immune responses (antibodies and CD4 T cells) to SARS-CoV-2 from natural infection and vaccination change over time, focusing on variants like Mu, Gamma, and Delta.
  • It found that antibody levels decline after 6 months, particularly in mildly infected individuals, while those severely infected maintain higher levels; vaccination boosts antibody production but they also decrease over time.
  • The cross-recognition of variants showed varying effectiveness, and prior exposure to the virus influenced the immune response, suggesting important considerations for future vaccine development against emerging variants.

Background: The differentiation and function of immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs) is dictated by the master transcription factor FoxP3. During HIV infection, there is an increase in Treg frequencies in the peripheral blood and lymphoid tissues. This accentuates immune dysfunction and disease progression.

We have previously demonstrated spermicidal activity of LL-37 antimicrobial peptide on mouse/human sperm and its contraceptive effects in female mice. With its microbicidal action against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, LL-37 warrants development into a multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) agent for administering into the female reproductive tract (FRT). However, it is important to verify that multiple administrations of LL-37 do not lead to damage of FRT tissues and/or irreversible loss of fecundity.
