A new benzodithiophene and benzotriazole-based terpolymer bearing a fluorescein derivative as a side group was synthesized and studied for organic solar cell (OSC) applications. This side group was covalently bounded to the backbone through an n-hexyl chain to induce the intramolecular Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) process and thus improve the photovoltaic performance of the polymeric material. The polymer exhibited good solubility in common organic chlorinated solvents as well as thermal stability (TDT10% > 360 °C).

Poly[(5,5'-(2,3-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)naphthalene-1,4-diyl)bis(thiophene-2,2'-diyl))--(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4,7-diyl)] (PEHONDTBT) was synthesized for the first time and through direct arylation polymerization (DAP) for use as p-donor material in organic solar cells. Optimized reaction protocol leads to a donor-acceptor conjugated polymer in good yield, with less structural defects than its analog obtained from Suzuki polycondensation, and with similar or even higher molecular weight than other previously reported polymers based on the 2,3-dialkoxynaphthalene monomer. The batch-to-batch repeatability of the optimized DAP conditions for the synthesis of PEHONDTBT was proved, showing the robustness of the synthetic strategy.

Conductive and flexible bio-based materials consisting of chitosan films coated with conductive poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were prepared. Thermal, optical, mechanical, morphological, wettability, and conductive properties were analyzed. In a very simple and effective method of chitosan film modification, a controlled volume of a P3HT solution was deposited onto a previously formed chitosan film, assisted by the spin coating method.

End-stage renal disease affects millions of people worldwide, and the only definitive solutions are renal transplants that are not widely available. Temporary solutions are renal replacement therapies such as peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration. These therapies as they are applied today are just partial measures and have many drawbacks and complications such as high mortality rates and high costs due to the use of supplemental drugs and emergency room visits.

We report a divergent synthetic strategy and novel design concept that exploit molecular mixtures to create amorphous organic charge-transporting glasses. Using Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, we synthesized well-defined molecular mixtures in a single step. These solution-processable materials are noncrystalline and show good thermal and morphological stabilities.

We have previously shown that kaolinite slowed down gastric emptying and intestinal transit and induced changes in enteric mechanical activities. As gastric emptying and intestinal transit have been shown to be regulated by nitric oxide (NO), the effect of an imposed ingestion of kaolinite on enteric nitrergic innervation was determined. Kaolinite has also been shown to increase plasmatic levels of leptin.

Background: Cerebral radiation necrosis is a relatively common complication of radiation therapy for intracranial malignancies which can also rarely be encountered after radiation of extracranial lesions of the head and neck. We present the first reported case of cerebral radiation necrosis in a patient who underwent radiation therapy for a plasmacytoma of the skull.

Case Description: A 68-year-old male with multiple myeloma presented with an enhancing right frontal mass, 8 years after receiving radiation therapy for a plasmacytoma of the left frontal skull.

Although some of the effects of clay ingestion by humans and animals, such as gastrointestinal wellness and the increase in food efficiency are well known, the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Therefore, the interactions between the intestinal mucosa and kaolinite particles and their effects on mucosal morphology were observed using light microscopy (LM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), conventional (CSEM) and environmental (ESEM) scanning electron microscopy combined with an EDX micro-analysis system. Kaolinite consumption, given with free access to rats, varied considerably from one animal to the other but was regular through time for each individual.
